The best hostel experience I've had by a country mile - it definitely deserves its good reputation. You know you're luck is in as soon as you arrive, with amazing views across the city and a few minutes walk away from all the fun craziness of Barrio Alto. The hostel itself is as good as the photos suggest, great modern design in an old atmospheric building. But the people really made it. You get the feeling that everyone who works there wants to be there as much as you do. There's a laid back friendly atmosphere that makes you feel at home before you've even got to your room. But don't mistake that for unprofessionalism, these guys know what they're doing and you can trust that they'll do whatever they can to make sure you have a great stay. It made my trip to Lisbon, thanks x

The Independente is located right in the outskirts of trendy neighbourhood Bairro Alto, and right outside the front door is a viewpoint from which you can look out over the beautiful city of Lisbon. In short the location of this place couldn't be any better. The staff, and especially the manager Manuel, were super friendly and helpful, showed us parts of the city we would have never found by ourselves. The rooms were nice and very clean, however during our stay (june/july) there were no fans or AC in the dorms which was a minus. The hostel restaurant (the decandente) is excellent, and well worth a visit even for those not staying at the Independente. Overall the vibe is great, you will meet a lot of cool people. Highly recommend this place!

The Independente is a Unique quality hostel - with SUITES - in the old socialist headquarters of Lissabon, which are now taken over by the new generation of surf-loving travellers. Everything from food to bunkbeds are top quality, but the prices are low. Don't know how that's possible?

The crowd is European Jack Johnson-fans mixed with local establishment. Eminent!

I was travelling to Lisbon for business so decided to arrive early for sightseeing. The Independente is a boutique hostel with a set of 4 large suites on the top floor, which is accessible via an old, small, but charmingly creaky elevator.

The suite I stayed in had an outdoor terrace with amazing views over western Lisbon. It was fitted out in the hostel's rustic/industrial chic, with good air-con and comfortable bed. THe rooms are large but as they're converted attics, most of the space is under a sloping roof so essentially good for only storing luggage. But who cares about the room - get out into the beer garden!

The back terrace/beer garden is attached the excellent Decadente restaurant and is a cozy little place to read, plan day-trips or sip on some excellent wine. Decent prices (under EUR12 mains) for good food. Decadente bar has nice decor, lively crowds and good drink prices.

The place *is* predominantly a hostel, so don't be surprised to find swarthy French Rugby players or backpack-clad Scandinavian girls loitering around the lobby or even making a racket out the front smoking. It's lively and fun and I saw plenty of families eating during the day at the restuarant out back.

The surrounding neighbourhood (Bairro Alto/Chiado) is perfect for food, drink and sightseeing day and night. Independente is situated on a narrow cobble-stone street up a hill, so ladies, be careful in your heels.

Room Tip: Suites are large and could fit a cot or trundle bed, if they offer it.

Great location, located right next to one if the city's viewing points. The hostel itself is beautiful and very clean. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family. The three story bunk beds are slightly terrifying haha.

Pros: really excellent staff and a great location - this hostel is a short (uphill) walk from the central train station, and right in the center of everything. The showers are definitely the best I've ever seen in a hostel and the mattresses are amazingly comfortable. Plus it's got a bunch of nice extras - powerstrips in the rooms for charing things, individual lights, a decent included breakfast, several free-access computers (if you don't have your own for the wifi, which is strong everywhere in the building and even reaches into the park across the street). They even give you proper duvets for the beds.

Cons: the toilet stall doors are cut way too small so they're only just barely high enough to be eye level. The dorm layout isn't great - several people have to sleep with their heads within a few feet of the door.

Room Tip: The 12-bed dorm has triple-stacked bunks - make sure to request a bottom one if you're afraid of...

I have never experienced anything similar before. We are not talking about a hostel when talking about THE INDEPENDENTE but about a historical portuguese mansion, where everybody feels at home and as a big family. It is unique from inside out: an amazing, caring and loving staff which makes you feel home and part of that beautiful place and town right away, wonderful guests matching the harmonic and enjoyable atmosphere that will make the encounters special and the acquaintances last, a beautiful architecture topped with good taste and latest design, a restaurant with a delicious menu and people from all over Lisbon coming and a big living room and modern kitchen for everybody to use, meet others and hang out before going to Lisbon's nightlife, or to just chill and read a book. To top all that, there is always something happening and great programs to create that lively ambiance: live music, "dine with the staff" for 5 Euros (fun & friendly company if traveling by oneself), free tours around Lisbon... Not to forget, that the location couldn't be better (historical city center, with a beautiful little park right in front of it, where you can have the best view over the whole city!). Everybody, who doesn't stay at The Independente is really missing something of Lisbon!! It might sound unbelievable, but this is truly how I have experienced staying/living there for 2 weeks- making it even harder to leave!! I have spent a magic, unforgettable time!! Thanks to THE INDEPENDENTE for making my stay so special!
