Beautiful hostel: Great staff, great ambiance, nice rooms (suites are the best), perfect location (in the centre of Lisbon). We were there with a group of 66 girls. Every girl enjoyed it a lot. The staff was really friendly and helpful. We got a few tips from them for nice places to see and clubs to go out and restaurants to go out for dinner. The contact and communication before we came to Lisbon was also really clear. The hostel recommended a transfer from the airport to the hostel and back. This was great as well. We also used this contact for more transfers. Overall a great experience!

I stayed at the Independente for about a week and had an amazing time. Not only were the rooms and bunk beds really cool, but the whole hostel had a hip, modern vibe and it was very easy meeting new people. I traveled alone but I would also highly recommend it for people traveling with friends. The staff was extremely friendly as well, and informed me of all the good sights to see in Lisbon. I fell in love with the city, and I would definitely go there again if I have the chance!

Good hostel, individually locked rooms with key card access, basic breakfast included, decor is a bit odd for my tastes but each to their own. Bathrooms were clean, staff friendly. Free computer usage in each floor. It demonstrates what a hostel should provide travellers.

Cozy, amazing value, friendly service! The hostel is in a perfect location, situated at the top of one of Lisboa's 7 hills, with a view of the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara (complete with open air cafes fountain and a gorgeous view:: of Chiado, Lisbon's "downtown" area, and historic landmarks like the Castle and Se, and the River Tejo). The hostel is in the heart of Lisboa's most vibrant and celebrated neighborhoods: "Bairro Alto", Principe Real, and Avenida da Liberdad.

You can find fun authentic restaurants and entertainment right outside the hostel walls or you can dine at the "The Decadente" which is famous for its wholesome yet gourmet interpretations of classic portuguese dishes (but at an amazing price!) I absolutely loved my experience at The Independente, the staff were kind, accommodating, and made fantastic recommendations for day trips and site seeing. I give it my highest endorsement!

an excellent hostel offering exceptional value for money and first class hospitality. The building - the former residence of the Swiss Ambassador to Portugal - retains a grand atmosphere with large rooms and tall ceilings. It possesses a laid-back atmosphere with eclectic styling and charming, helpful, multi-lingual staff. Breakfast (cereal, juice, hot chocolate/tea/coffee, ham, cheeses and bread with jam) is included in the price. Phenomenal!

For 5 Euros a night, you can eat with the staff and have a plateful of a local delicacy and small dessert. Happy hour between 18.00 and 20.00 allows you to buy a small beer for 1Euro and a glass of wine for 1.5Euro.

Room Tip: rooms facing the main road can be a little noisy on weekend evenings, especially as they are above t...

If you want to sleep friday and saturday nights be aware noise is quite loud. Located right next to area with lots of bars. Also panoramic view over the city from the park in front of hostel. Staff was friendly and advised you any way they could. Bar in downstairs seemed to be quite popular.

Loved this hostel/suite which is very bohemian in character. Our suite was very spacious and the bathroom was of ample size too with a large shower. The room was clean and had a coffee making machine although you need to ask for this to be replenished at a cost they did not charge us as we were unaware and we got enough for two but only one of us drink coffee. The view was simply stunning and the hotel is located across the road from mirador São Paulo. It was perfectly located for getting into the busy areas both during the day (Elevator de Gloria is a two minute walk) and at night check out the streets behind and down the road for lively bars and restaurants.
The night we arrived it was late and although the kitchen for the restaurant had closed they did provide us with soup which was delicious and perfect for what we needed. The bar was busy with locals and people staying in the hostel. The house wine and a beer will only set you back €4 and a mere €2.50 during happy hour although they do have other wines which are delicious and we let the Bar man choose which he did very well.
The breakfast was fresh and very tasty filling you up for the day ahead. The bacon and eggs were delicious and would recommend you try them at least once.
The staff were fantastic and knowledgable of the area and spoke excellent English. They were very cheerful and appeared to enjoy working there.
The transport system is amazing in Lisbon and if you have never been before I would recommend getting the metro to baixa/chiado station walk to the neighbouring square and then walk up the road to the hotel which is about a five minute walk away and will only cost you €1.40!
We used the trip advisor site map which never let us down and also the pocket guide app which was great for more detailed knowledge and the tours.
We have been totally sold on the hostel experience and would look to this option again when travelling as opposed to a hotel - if staying in the suite I would ask for one with views of the river.
