“Great location and style, but stay a bit spoilt”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

This place has a lot going for it. Located in a quiet part of Bairro Alto, all the hum and action of the neibourhood's nightlife is just a few streets away. Plus, it's walking distance to every other part of this truly great city. The rooms are stylish, the common areas downstairs are really lovely and interesting, the breakfasts generous, and the staff were helpful. I have just one sticking point, and I think we might have been unlucky to witness it, but nonetheless it kind of sullied an otherwise pleasant two night stay. On coming down the stairs one morning for breakfast, my teenage daughter and I saw and overheard a very loud and annoyed/angry exchange in Portuguese. It did not stop as we sat down to our breakfast, it just continued with no regard for our discomfort as the only other people in the room. A young staff member was being berated by someone we had not met (a senior staff member or owner perhaps?). I don't speak Portuguse so the content was not known to me, perhaps that's why it was considered OK to just keep at it. However, the tone was perfectly understandable. We found the whole thing very unprofessional whatever language or content was being spoken (surely a private time/space would have been better if words were needed), and the poor young staff member was visibly upset when alone with us afterwards. I liked it here, but certainly hope this kind of occurance was a one-off.

Hotel was friendly, clean and in the heart of the Bairro, which we liked. Lots of good bars and restaurants close by. The common areas and room were clean and well maintained if a little simple. We really liked the large common room for breakfastand general hanging out. The breakfast was great and the innkeepers were friendly and helped with all of our questions and directions to sites. As some people have said, the hotel is in an area that's a little rough around the edges, but we never felt unsafe in anyway. The streets are steep and a little difficult to manage if you are not the hiking type. That being said, I think this area has a lot of personality and was a great place to roam the streets at night. I found my room to be adequately quiet and rather large, however no view, (Room 5).

Room Tip: Room 5 is large with a large bathroom and windows, but no view. Also, I would take a taxi here upon...

We loved this place! When we arrived in Lisbon, our taxi got incredibly lost trying to find the B&B so we were concerned that we'd never make it back at night... not sure about the taxi driver, it was really easy and convenient and we knew our way around right away. The area is fun and close enough to walk to many places. The Casa Janelas was so comfortable, the rooms were pretty, clean and ours ( 11, and our friend's room 7) had AMAZING views. The staff was so great and warm and helpful. No noise issues for us, but maybe the A/C blocked it out. The living room area is great, has a loft feel and it has an arty feel...comfortable and a good place to hang out.

Room Tip: 7 or 11 are rooms with great views, although 11 is at the top, lots of stairs so keep that in mind...

Stayed 6 nights in this conveniently located accommodation. Bairro Alto is a bit 'seedy' but quite safe to walk around at night and within (steep) walking distance of lots of attractions and appealing places to eat. Casa Janelas is in a tiny narrow street, difficult to find on first arrival, and almost impossible for driving and parking. OK if you don't have a car.

Our 'river view' room was comfortable and had a good quality ensuite. However, the view is over-stated, considering the ugly concrete and tin roofs in the foreground. Breakfast was abundant, fresh and had plenty of choice. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here and the staff, especially Joao, went out of their way to be helpful.

In spite of the positives, there is a major negative to be considered. The rooms have VERY POOR sound-proofing. On a couple of our 6 nights we were kept awake by 'party animals' who left to go out at about 11pm and returned at 2 or 3am, full of spirits (literally and metaphorically), and kept us awake with their loud re-entry, sexual exploits (which were quite audible) and general rowdiness. This spoilt an otherwise enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Room 3 was one of the best, but doesn't excuse the lack of sound-proofing.

This hotel is charming. The staff was very kind, and the "living room" is wonderful (large common room that is also used for breakfast). Our room was very nice, although a bit noisy in the morning. The location of the hotel is original : in the middle of an old neighborhood of Lisbon, next to the city centre, and very close to great restaurants. It's hard to get there by cab, don't hesitate to call the hotel if you're lost !

Great place, great location (and calm), nicely decorated, nice staff. We were in a classical hotel before and for the same price (or even cheaper) we made the right choice by moving to that guest house.

Lisbon were the final destination before Home in our trip through Portugal. We decided to stay this time at Bairro Alto, and checked in for a 2 night stay. Thank God this was also the day we returned our rented car, it was hard to drive to this hotel in order to drop our bags, Bairro Alto narrow streets are really stressing to drive through.
We call the hotel previously in order to check and our room were made available many hours before the usual check in time! The staff were super friendly and attentious. The room was somehow very small (#4 with river view), but the bed and pillows, sheets were absolutely comfortable. The bathroom was a good size. Decoration is modern and you can tell it's taken care of, nice style.
The breakfast was for sure the best we had for the last 15days of our trip. It all seems to be homemade but it's all gourmet at the same time: fresh fruits, cakes and pastries, juices, good breads, the best eggs and bacon, etc.
If ever staying again in Bairro Alto, this would be our pick.
