If u are looking for a place to listen to fado without feeling you just walked into the next tourist trap this is the place. Situated on a quiet street in the Alafama district, the tasca has it all: beer, port, smoke and FADO! It's just like it should be, it gets packed on a Friday night but just squeeze in!

I loved this little bar/restaurant in the Bairro Alto. Went on a Wednesday and had a great fado experience. The place is small and was packed, but the atmosphere and music were first rate. Football (soccer) scarves from the Portuguese-speaking world cover the ceiling, dim lamps barely illuminate the place, and the walls are covered with portraits of Fado greats throughout the years. Hardly any non-Portuguese in the place. Good music, wonderful atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended.

This was the one and only BAD EXPERIENCE I had during my entire 10-day trip to Portugal. This place is small, about 10 tables, and the only people working there were an old guy who moves very slowly and a young woman, neither of whom ever smiled. I walked in and waited to be seated but they ignored me, so I seated myself at one of the tables. They knew I was there, but they ignored me for the first 15 minutes -- no joke. The guy finally took my drink order, but wouldn't give me a food menu for another 10 minutes. He served other (probably local) people before me. I still don't know how to explain any of this, because everywhere else I went in Portugal the people were all so nice. But not here. (By the way, this place has two locations, and I went to the one in Alfama on Rua dos Remedios.)

The food wasn’t great to be honest, but the atmosphere more than made up for it. There were rotating male singers (all of whom looked like regular schmoes off the street) along with two very talented guitarists. They sang three songs each with a half hour break in between, the time we spent talking to the others we shared a table with. It’s definitely a relaxing time and a good way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing and meet some locals.
