“Very nice hotel but make sure you stay in a renovated room!”
Reviewed October 23, 2009

Last week we went to Lisbon for a little break. Because we have a 6-year old daughter, we always try to get a hotel with a swimming pool. In the heart of Lisbon there are not many hotels with a pool, so that was the reason we chose the Tivoli.

After an early flight we arrived ad 10 am in the hotel. The receptiondesk was very accomodating trying to find us a room although official check in time was hours later. We were given the option to upgrade to a Tivoli room (one of the renovated roomtypes) with breakfast for the three of us from a standard room without breakfast for EUR 60/day. As already was suggested in several reviews there is a big difference between standard/old rooms and the new ones, so we were happy to upgrade.

And we were definitely not disappointed! What a wonderful big room, beautfully decorated, with a nice bathroom (with super rainshower and seperate bad), wonderful light design and heavenly bed!

We didn't get to see one of the standard rooms but we saw a big difference in the corridors: ours was very nicely decorated with design lighting, the corridors with standard rooms were bland. If this is a good indication of the difference in rooms, we were very happy paying extra for the renovated room!

Breakfast was served in restaurant Flo. The room itself is an experience with its high ceiling and beautiful wooden decorations. Because there are also a lot of diplomats/business man having an early meeting over breakfast the atmosphere is lively. The breakfastbuffet itself was ok: excellent food but nothing truly special.

The first day we went swimming but the water was very cold. This and the not so good weather at the end of our trip prevented us from more swimmingactivities.

Location of the hotel is super! You can very easily walk to the big Rossio square, but the hotel is also only one block away from metrostaton Avenida. The daytickes on public transport are highly recommend because with all the hills it's easier to take a tram, lift of metro to higher elevantions. And the little yellow trams are an attraction by itself. Taxi to the airport was only EUR 10,--.

To sum it up: we stayed in quite a few nice hotels, but this was definitely one of the best. I would definetely recommend the hotel but make sure you stay in a renovated room!

It looked great on the website, but that did not do it justice. The service, the standard of rooms, the lobby, and the sky bar, everything was outstanding.

If you do stay at this hotel, the sky bar on the top floor is a must. Wonderful views of the city, great during the day but beautiful at night.

Only one flaw, the swimming area is not very accessible for people with disabilities, but it looked like they were in the process of putting a ramp around the side.

Excellent location, Right near all the attractions. Airport Bus drops you off within 5 min walk from the hotel. Subway stations very close by in 2 different lines (red and green I think). Room was a bit small, but manageable. They provided a small cot for our 8 yr old at no extra cost. Early check in and Late check out was given to us at no cost.
Breakfast Buffet was excellent. Slightly expensive, but worth it. If you get the Breakfast Buffet Included deal, great deal. Otherwise, can eat outside (quite a few cafe's close by)
Front desk and Conceirge were really helpful. Could direct you properly to all the locations. Even if one did not know, they were helpful and told us by asking their freind.
Business center was free to check your email. High speed internet in your room is not available. I remember it is around 25 Euros/day(?)

The location is great. The staff is also great. I can say that hotel was not very good, but not bad either. Anyway, I do not think that is a 5* hotel. The main hall was nice, but the rooms are still not refurnished (or maybe the old fashion style was desired). The TV that I’ve got in my room not only that was a very old type, but the TV stated only from the TV’s button and the remote control hardly could do its job. The restaurant was nice. I do not think the price is worth it. I could recommend this hotel for people who don’t care about spending money for little comfort.

The Tivoli is a wonderful hotel. (not a hip hotel vibe... for that go down the street to the Sofitel). The hotel is definitely old world in terms of decoration but the rooms are recently furnished. We had a junior suite (a separate double king bedroom, a living room with a couch, comfortable chair, and desk/table...each room a flat screen tv with enough shows in English for some downtime; and there was a huge bathroom w/a separate rainshower and tub). All brand new. Great shampoos and creams. The turndown service was great...restocked towels, gave you slippers...

The internet was free (four computers) with water and ice tea. Breakfast was included (huge buffet...eggs, pancakes, fruit, cheese, pastries, cereal...huge and wonderful service).

The pool is also great. It is circular with lounge chairs (matresses) and the hotel created an oasis in the city with plants around it (there is a bar there as well). The skybar on the top floor has amazing views of the city...eat there or have drinks. I saw someone having tea in the lobby bar...looked very nice. The gym doesn't have a tv but is open 24/7 and has two bikes, two treadmills, and some weight machines).

For my children (baby and four year old), they brought in a crib and cot at no extra charge. The floor manager (Sylvie) brought presents for my older son (coloring books, stool, etc). The next day she sent over cookies and hot chocolate.

But most of all, the staff is incredibly fantastic. They know who you are and are extremely helpful with everything. Everyone was wonderful and friendly. They made the stay even better.

(also...there is a grocery store a block and a half away, a charming take-out/coffee bar/restaurant half a block away, and excellent looking seafood restaurants down the street)

Nice hotel in the middle of Lisbon, close to all major attractions, adn close to subway station. The hotel is located on the main avenue. The hotel looks very nice, although I think the rooms need some refurbishment. Breakfast in the restaurant on the top floor was great, as was the view from the restaurant over the city. I wouldn't stay here again, as the hotel is very expensive (company paid for it) and I prefer more modern looking hotels.

Great location, midway down the Avenida da Liberdade and one block from the Metro. We were upgraded on arrival to one of the newly refurbished rooms on the upper floors - brilliant views of the castle and the Avenida, and very quiet - and the Brasserie Flo for breakfast (and even lunch) was a delight. The staff were unfailingly courteous and attentive (my wife was on crutches for this trip). The pool IS now fully functional - very refreshing after a hot day's sightseeing - and in a verdant gem of a garden (tho' small): shared with the Tivoli Jardim next door, but not overcrowded.
