Owner description: The "Café Luso" established in Lisbon in 1927 at nr.31 of Avenida da Liberdade and later in 1939 moved to the Palace Brito Freire in the Bairro Alto borough. This Palace built in the late 17th Century for an aristocratic family, survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1755 and has remained almost untouched up to today. The "Café Luso", Fado House and Restaurant, is located within a solid and austere area, the former cellars and stables of the Palace Brito Freire, also known as Palace of St. Roque. The decorative patrimony includes the ceramic panels by Master Ferreira da Silva (1960's) and more recently the paintings of acrylic on canvas by Mr. Norberto Nunes. The "Café Luso" fulfils daily its destiny: to combine the sensibility and taste of the artistic and gastronomic talents, by permanently paying attention to its main aim , to preserve and innovate, making sure that stimulates and keep a cohesive Team, both skilful and creative. Being the Fado a tradition that cannot be translated, the Café Luso summons all those who visit us to return and feel the sounds of the Portuguese Soul.

Nice restaurant in a very old historic area. Lots of nightlife outside. Good food in the restaurant!!! The Fado starts...... it's ok. But when we thought it was over and our dinner was done, we get up to leave and are told the real show is just about to start and we should stay. So, we do. They move the tables and chairs around and the intimate show starts. Singers and musicians come up one by one and sing their hearts out. Very entertaining. The performers are only a few feet in front of you. We finally had to leave because we were getting tired. I"m sure they went on all night!

It was just first time to listen to fado for me. Nice atmosphare. We visited quite late and did not reserved but could meet good seats. I bought CD but defenetly better to listen the raw voice. I can not compare to other places but could enjoy music, atmosphare. The price was reasonable for only 16 euro per person including drinks.

Cafe Luso is a big and nicely decorated restaurant playing fado in Bairro Alto. Somebody should be very good in promoting the place as it is full with tourists and organized groups, a real touristically industry with its disadvantages: average service, average to bad food and wines, commercial entertainment.
The prices were higher then what they were offering, for a dinner in 2 with a bottle of wine and no desert paying about 150 Euro.
You will find better food in many places in Bairro Alto but if you are looking for good food plus fado, Alfama is a better choice.

Very rarely do I write a bad review but I feel compelled to let anyone know who may be out for a night on the town in Lisbon to avoid this place. The staff was friendly first off so no attack on them but the food is way overpriced to compensate for the entertainment which in turn was not very good (my wife dozed off within the first 15 minutes for a few). The wait for the food took forever and when it came, was not very good or even warm for that matter. They charge for simple things like bread and the wine was of the worst variety I had in a country that has fantastic wine. Criminal.

We were able to reserve seats for a late night show and saw 5 different acts, including the owner. The music was entrancing, and even the aging diva who must have starred in the 1920's was a wonderful entertainer. By getting the later seating, we only had to order wine and desert to cover the minimum charge, so the price was quite reasonable. We even bought a souvenir CD so we could enjoy the memories back home.
