The staff were extremely helpful & polite, particularly with regard to advice of things to see and they spoke excellent English! We arrived at around midnight, but they had made arrangements in advance for us to access the room - thoughtful & organised. Breakfast great, but get there early to bags the window seat! Was quite noisy outside but with the windows shut and zircon on - no probe! Great location too, particularly for nightlife, transport & the city centre. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: keep windows closed!

Staying in the Ribeira Tejo Boutique Guesthouse in Lisbon is a great experience. We had wonderful rooms on the 4. floor with a nice view on the river Tejo. The delicious breakfast is served on the 5. floor. One of the windows facing the Tejo has a broad sill to have your breakfast on while looking at ships on the river. On arrival a welcome drink is offered together with a lot of very helpful information about the city and surrounding places. The young people running the Guesthouse are very kind and knowledgeable and they help you with everything you need. One evening they made a reservation for us in a typical Fado-Restaurant aside from the touristic mainstream. This was a really good recommendation, and there of course you cannot pay with credit card.
We very much appreciated the kindness and helpfulness of all people we met in this Guesthouse, especially we thank Rita and Vera for their excellent recommendations.

My husband and I arrived early at the B&B from the airport, but we were very warmly greeted and given a quick tour. Our room wasn't ready so they stored our bags for us, gave us a map and sent us on our way until check-in time. It's a block from the river and across the street from a busy farmers market, so it was easy to fill the time in and around the neighbourhood and to get ourselves acquainted with the area. Our room was lovely, the service pleasant, the breakfast set-up relaxing and the food (and espresso) good. We had a room overlooking the market to the river. We didn't feel up to going out for dinner the first night as we were a bit jet lagged but we were able to help ourselves to some breakfast leftovers, snacks, wine and beer from the fridge in the main kitchen (which you sign for and pay at check out). We could easily walk to most places in the city from the guest-house and the funicular and/or Tram 28 close by will take you up to the top of the hill if you're not up for the walk. As I had read in some TA reviews before booking this accommodation, there are some questionable-looking characters hanging around in a nearby square, but as city dwellers, it was nothing we're not used to seeing... unfortunately. The convenient location outweighed the local colour and we never felt in any danger. There's free wireless, English television options, a comfortable bed and an elevator to the 4th floor. We enjoyed our 3 day stay in Lisbon and would happily recommend this guesthouse as a clean and comfortable place to lay your head.
Just one thing to be aware of, the food market opens early in the morning twice a week, so the farmers arrive with their fresh produce around 5 a.m to get set up. It can be a bit noisy, but if you're up for it, it's fun to watch all the comings and goings from your window.

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Portugal. Sadly, we were only able to spend one night at the Ribeira Guesthouse. We love to stay at places with character and charm. This is one of those places. It is unique in the fact that the owners have preserved the original old Lisbon architecture while making the rooms modern and trendy. It's a really special place. On top of that, they have fantastic, friendly staff which make all the difference!
As others have commented, the neighbourhood may appear sketchy, but it was festival week and there were always people outside and we never felt threatened. I've felt more nervous walking my own town in the evening! The location is actually quite good and within easy walking distance of the Metro and many attractions.
Be sure to have lunch or tea in the cafe downstairs. It's a really cool place with a great vibe. The food is simple but fresh and delicious. Take the time to check out the mural on the wall. Kids will love it!
Lastly, we loved the breakfast. Hot crepes and beignettes...mmm.
I have only given the guesthouse 4 stars as it was a bit noisy for us. As it is an older building, the floors are wooden and we could hear the people upstairs clomping around into the wee hours. I just wanted you to be aware of this so you could pack earplugs!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Ribeira Tejo by Shiadu was once by the river… Actually only the Mercado da Ribeira and the Cais do Sodre station separate the fully renovated building of the Ribeira Tejo by Shiadu from the River Tagus. Most of the tiles from the 19th Century were renovated and can be seen from various points of the communal areas and also in some double and family suites. Take the lift to the 4th floor and simply use the stair to go up to the 5th floor, where you will find the best view at the Ribeira Tejo by Shiadu. There is nothing better than friendly and dedicated staff to welcome you and serve you a delicious home-made breakfast where you will have the opportunity of watching the ships go by, crossing under the 25th of April Bridge along with looking out to the Cristo Rei always on the lookout for any movement. Then, filled with energy you may begin your visit of Lisbon through the neighbourhoods of Chiado, Baixa and Bairro Alto which are less than a 10 minute walk-away from the Guesthouse, or if you prefer, you may also get on the No. 15 tram or the No. 28 tram to Alfama and Belem.
