A really nice concept hotel in a renovated old school. The school theme is displayed throughout the hotel with info on blackboards and old educational posters in the rooms. The rooms are tasteful and spacious and the staff is very friendly and helpful. But sometimes one gets the impression that there are small things which should be improved. Some examples: there was no soap for washing hands, the shampoo and shower gel and the toilet paper were not replaced. These things are of course minor, but in order to live up to the standard of Small Luxury Hotels even small faults count.
The hotel is situated near the beautiful Jardim Guerra Junqueiro and the imposing Basilica da Estrela. conntection to downtown Lisbon works fine with the nr 28 tram.
I do recommend this hotel.

I have lived at this lovelly hotel with my family (wife and 3 year-old child) for more than 3 months (before, I had lived at Chiado, a very touristic place in Lisbon). I think it is a great advantage to be here, because you can have a more authentic stay in Portugal. The beatifull place has been restored lately, so it is a perfect blend of modern and traditional Portuguese style. It is near a beautiful public garden called Jardim da Estrela. The rooms are very spacious and clear and are always well cleaned. The staff is very kind, helpfull and efficient. I think it is, by far, the best choice to stay in Lisbon!!

I stayed here for 2 nights while on a business trip to Lisbon with colleagues. Charming boutique hotel, clearly very new, with an interesting theme (school!). Quiet but walking distance to old centre, also tram stop close by. Service friendly. Very good value for money, clean and cosy. Just a couple of minor niggles with the room: first, whenever I took a shower the water didn`t drain but sat in pools on the side of the bath, or on the floor (they are trying to sort this out apparently). Second, my room overlooked a small outside terrace, which meant I had to keep blinds down for privacy. But there are rooms with a different view.
Would highly recommend, and the restaurant where you pay what you think the food is worth!

Room Tip: Ask for room on higher floor, and/or facing street

Just came back from Hotel da Estrela and have to say it completely lived up to the reviews I read prior to checking in. You must stay here if you are visiting Lisboa! This is a fabulous boutique hotel, with a clever school house theme. It's decor is modern and functional. The service is outstanding. Each of the staff we encountered were sincere, helpful and friendly.
The queen-bed room is a very generous size and the room appointment is very modern, clean and comfortable. The bathroom is surprisingly large for a European hotel so I think most North American visitors will be pleasantly surprised!
Location is fantastic. The Estrela neighbourhood is a little quieter than the Bairro Alto or the Alfama so it's a great little oasis in Lisbon and very easy to walk to many restaurants, cafe's, the beautiful Estrela garden, the tram 28 station and also close to the Rato metro station if you want to hop the subway.
Wifi is free in the main hotel areas such as the lobby and the bar (which is very cool and quiet). Also there is free cable internet in the rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a queen-size room!

Stayed there for three nights. Did not find a single negative things that could cloud my very favorable impression about hotel. Staff is very friendly and helpful (thanks, Isabelle!) in your quest to know the city. The room is spacious even by American standards. Location is discreet, but close to the attractions. Morning breakfast is what you expect from such a great place! Really happy. Will be coming back for sure.

Wife and I stayed at this cozy little hotel in March 2011, and we truly enjoyed it immensely. The property is located near the center of the city and all touristic locations are accessible via taxi or city bus if you prefer. The food, staff, property, location, and all of the accomodations were wonderful. We recommend this lovely hotel to anyone interested in traveling to Lisbon. The staff was amazingly attentive and there to serve your every need. (and YES the staff spoke English!) My wife and I look forward to going back to Lisbon to visit places left unseen, and when we do return, we will stay at the Hotel da Estrela.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Perched at the top of a very steep hill (not one for the weary-legged!), it's a little west of the city centre near the Rato metro stop with plenty of cafes, antique shops, parks, a basilica and lovely views all in strolling distance.

The hotel is inspired by a schoolhouse in its decor, with blackboard carpets, writing slates, and a salvaged desktop and classroom posters on the walls. The room, bed and the bathroom were generously sized, spotlessly clean and comfortable. The room was quiet although we could hear the music being pumped into the hallways, and our view backed onto a schoolyard which was noisy when the student were out.

The restaurant and bar on the lower ground floor carried on the schoolhouse decor scheme, and there was a pretty outside terrance and garden too. Breakfast was a substantial buffet included in the price with good breads, pastries and cheeses. The restaurant looked nice but we couldn't try it as there were very few vegetarian dishes.

Service in general was charming but inobtrusive, helped by students from the hospitality school next door. The best part was a gift of flowers and ginjinha (local cherry liqueur) left in the room on my birthday. Don't be put off by the fact that it's only been open a few months - I'd highly recommend this as a great place to stay in Lisbon.
