“worth the trip”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This museum isn't exactly centrally located but its worth the trip. It is easy to get to the museum via public transit. The tiles on display are wonderful and the building the museum is housed in- a former monastery- is a sight to see in itself. When is Lisbon, add this to your list.

Tiles are Portugal´s Pride. This large Museum gives you a comprehensive view of tiles along the centuries. Plan a day long visit to it, this Museum deserves such a visit. There is a nice restaurant.

“Heart of Portugal”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

The Portugues are the masters of tiles / azulejos and the museum is there to prove it. I was completely amazed by it, the way they turned this carft into art. All over Lisboa (subway included) you can see great art works made by tiles of tiple made into artwork if you wish. The museum shows how the craft has evolved throughout history and a great panoromic view of old Lisboa crafted - obviously - in Azulejos.

There are some exhibits of modern / contemporary works which are also quite spectacular.

“Great museum, worth the trek”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

It was a beautiful museum, with rooms based in an old convent, the most ornate church, cloisters within and examples of tiles throughout the ages. The cafe was lovely, in an internal terrace garden and the best bit of all - the terrapins swimming in the pond. It was a real walk to get there however, a good mile beyond the main tourist areas, so either get the bus or wear comfortable

“A Hidden Gem”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

Was pleasantly surprised by this marvelous museum after Rick Steves gave it a mere one star (out of three) of places to visit in Lisbon. The building itself is gorgeous, and the tiles are really fascinating. Even if you don't think you're interested in tiles, this is well worth your time. In addition to tiles, there are church chapels and ornate interiors full of gold-leaf splendor and other architectural treats. Make sure to have a coffee on the large garden patio or lunch in the charming cafe.
