I have to admit, I usually choose ultra modern hotels, so I was slightly apprehensive about the Britania as it was branded as "Art Deco". However, I threw caution to the wind as it was number 1 here on Tripadvisor. It was the best decision ever!

Right from the outset, it was apparent that the staff make this place. Every single person we met had a big smile on their face, it was a real pleasure chatting with them. They were courteous and helpful. One of the ladies on reception even organised for some fantastic Portuguese sparkling wine, pastries and candles for the room as she found out it was my birthday. Such a wonderful touch!

We stayed in a standard room and were surprised at how spacious it was. Usually City centre hotels are a third of the size of this room. Okay, the view was not particularly great (office block view!), but we've stayed in 5 star hotels in other European cities with a similar view. Anyway, the room was so tastefully decorated (and the weather outside so rainy) that you wanted to just admire the room itself.

We both said that the bed was one of the most comfortable we've slept on, with some fantastically soft white linen. There were also lovely Molton Brown toiletries making it a home away from home!

Another perk of the hotel is their afternoon tea, which we made sure we visited every day. They have a lovely selection of miniature pastries, tea, port and Ginja (perhaps an acquired taste, we felt it tasted like bubblegum!). They had a games table so we could play a few games of backgammon whilst relaxing after a day of walking around Lisbon!

Finally, location wise, it's fairly decent. I was a bit concerned before we left that it wasn't that close to the "action", however we found it really easy to walk to the Baixa/Chiado area; if you fancy going out for dinner in Barrio Alto, we found getting the Elevador Santa Justa was a quick way to get up the hill without too much effort! As a result, I ended up being not so concerned about the location.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this very tasteful, friendly hotel!

The service in this hotel is exceptional and definitely 5-stars.
While the rooms were pretty good (they were big and nice, but the mattress was not comfortable, slept on one of the twin beds and not on a double bed, so not sure what's the case for double beds), the service was extraordinary and really exceptional.

Afternoon tea was a delight and really nice-to-have. The breakfast was also very nice, though a bit on the pricey side.

Location is fair enough and close to the metro station and a short walk from the old town.

Overall, great hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are delighted to read that you appreciated our service which is something we are continuously working on.
We are very sorry that you didn’t find our twin beds comfortable. Although the mattresses are medium firm in order to please the majority of our guests, we have the possibility of making them softer or firmer according to the guest’s desire. That also makes part of our tailored service.
Thank you once more and we are looking forward to welcoming you again to the Britania Hotel.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo

We went from Friday to Monday at the end of January to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary and were hoping for a decent hotel and a slightly milder weekend than England could offer. Well the weather was great and the hotel was even better. Well located just off Liberdade the hotel was entered from the slightly uninspiring street via a beautiful arte deco doorway, the door being opened as our taxi arrived by the ever attentive doorman. The hotel is as beautiful as described by other reviewers and all the staff, without exception, spent the whole of our stay making our experience special, always making helpful suggestions and booking taxis and restaurants. The high point was the booking of a superb restaurant for our anniversary evening and it was clear when we arrived at the restaurant to find we had the best table in the house, with panoramic views of the city, that the hotel had made it clear to them that this was a special evening. When we got back at the end of the evening we had an extra surprise of champagne and pastry laid out in our room. I cannot praise this hotel highly enough and wish to thank all the staff for creating such a wonderful weekend for us,

The rooms and beds are enormous. Very close to downtown and metro stations. Staff were delightfully helpful, especially Raquel, with restaurant and site recommendations. Even locating a hairdresser!. Breakfasts are terrific. Beautiful art deco original building with a fascinating history.

An excellent hotel (33 rooms only) of great character / history with very well-trained staff. All rooms face out to the quiet back-street (6 rooms on each of 5 floors with 3 suites on the 6th). Because we stayed for a week we were upgraded to a superior room (room 52) which was great. Fresh clean sheets EVERY day ! (even the toilet roll was changed to a fresh one daily!). 32" digital Samsung TV (40 channels). Spotlessly clean. Tea making facilities in bedroom. Cork tiles mean you can move about soundlessly at night! Also little sound can be heard from the street. Very comfortable beds. Breakfast was excellent; fresh orange juice, pastries, bread, yoghurt, fresh fruit salad, hot bacon/scrambled eggs/tomatoes/sausages/mushrooms/courgettes. Also plenty of good tea/coffee or if you like you can even spoil yourself and have your pick from the Nespresso coffee machine at breakfast. Financial Times newspaper and Lisbon guides available.

Amongst all the very helpful and excellent staff, we found the Ukranian lady (Tatiana), who was in charge of breakfast,to be the sweetest and most delightful! But all the staff are superb.

You cannot review this hotel without mentioning the afternoon teas (available 5pm to 9pm) where white tea is served in the library with a selection of pastries. Also port and gingha for an aperitif. These complimentary goodies are frequently replenished by the bar staff (thank you Jefferson!).

It's very difficult to find anything bad to say about this wonderful, historic,quaint and excellently-situated hotel. (If there was one thing it would may be the sounds from neighbouring rooms but this is really picking holes!). Congratulations to all the management and staff.

We went in January 2014 (very rainy!) but loved Lisbon, especially enjoying trips on the railway to Sintra and along the cost to Cascais / Estoril. About £5 return each. Also, get a daily 6 euro travel ticket and use it to travel on the Metro,buses,venicular and trams (take tram no. 28 from Rossio square and travel around the city for a fun hour).

Thank you Britania. We hope to be back very soon!

Room Tip: 6 rooms per floors 1-5, 3 on floor 6 . Probably little difference between any in the hotel on floors...

My friend and I stayed there for several nights.

PROs:

- central location;
- staff (Pedro was the best!!);
- great breakfast (10 only euro if you prepay);
- own garage;
- nice Xmas decoration and interior (we had our room on the last floor with patio) of the room;
- free wifi smartly setup - it remembers your IP and mext time you dont have to login, good and stable signal (in the room);
- tea and coffee amenities in the room;
- even a complimentary bottle of wine ))
- also we got free tickets on a classic concert!

CONs:

- not a very rich choice of bath amenities (no hair conditioner for example);
- mixing faucet was working bad (every time one opens a washbasin while a shower was working - the last one gets a shock wave of a icy water));
- a/c even if were set on "low fan" was blowing our heads away )); and a bit noisy;
- pyjamas were put on dirty suitcases;
- a bit narrow elevator;
- opposite building was too close, so a bit irritating - always had to think to close the curtains in the evenings.

The rates are low, the service is excellent, the staff is remarkable - what else do you need to take a decision?! )) Go ahead!

Have just returned from spending a week in Lisbon staying at the Hotel Britania - a wonderful Art Deco building in the heart of Lisbon. From the moment of our arrival to the point of our departure we were made to feel so welcome by the hotel staff - nothing was too much trouble and everything was accompanied by a warm smile. Front desk restaurant recommendations were accurate, the rooms large and beautifully furnished - complete with a never ending supply of port wine. Breakfasts were good - only area that needs improvement is the quality of the room service menu. Close by are a row of small and inexpensive restaurants offering authentic portuguese delights. This hotel ranks as one of the best of the very many hotels that I have stayed in.
