“Worth the trip to Lisbon”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

We stayed here for a week in October 2013 (our second visit to the Britania), and cannot say enough about the overall atmosphere, quality of management and service, architecture, history, decor and amenities -- including a bountiful and excellent breakfast, and lovely bonus of afternoon tea. Because my husband had bronchitis for much of our Lisbon stay, we spent an unusual amount of time at the hotel itself. This meant that we appreciated all the more the living room-like lobby, our spacious bedroom, and especially the extraordinarily warm, competent and helpful staff (special thanks to Rachel at the front desk). As others have noted, the location is also fabulous for walking or taking the metro. I would recommend the Britania unconditionally to anyone who is visiting the fascinating and generally under-estimated city of Lisbon and environs.

Room Tip: We had Room 51 and loved it -- very spacious, marble bathroom, original cork floors.

We loved our stay, the staff were excellent always going out of their way to help. The whole atmoshere was relaxing stress free. The standard of accomodation was brilliant. Location was great for walking, subway use & airport transport. Breakfast excellent. Afternoon tea a lovely touch. A bit expensive compared to some other hotels but well worth the money. If we visit Lisbon again would certainly choose this hotel. We were lucky enough to be there when the hotel was celebrating its 69th anniversary. The guests were invited to a celebratary champagne & canape party were we got to meet the owners, a throughly enjoyable experience.

Room Tip: Book a superior room if you can, it has plenty of space and a complimentary decanter of port !

We stayed for four nights (room 11) and other reviews are pretty accurate. Our room had a small vestibule / dressing area between the bedroom and bathroom and the bedroom was very large, well-decorated but somewhat dark. The bathroom was also large and spotlessly clean and I appreciated the Moulton Brown toiletries. These were regularly replenished, unlike the items on our tea tray but the staff happily supplied the missing items when requested.

The freshly squeezed orange juice and Nespresso machine were welcome at breakfast and the breakfast room / lounge was comfy. My husband enjoyed the tea and pastries in the afternoon. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the guest in the adjoining room (with which we had a locked, connecting door) wasn't in the same laid back, restrained vibe that the hotel exudes. For the middle two of our four nights she was excessively loud and stopped us sleeping. So much so that on both nights my husband resorted to padding down to reception in his pyjamas to complain because banging on the wall, knocking on the door and ringing on the bell, had no effect whatsoever.

A hotel isn't responsible for that type of selfish and anti-social behaviour from its guests but undoubtedly this spoiled our stay. One of the criterion I use when I rate a hotel is whether I would stay again and in this case, I wouldn't.

Room Tip: Don't go for number 11 as it's rather dark

Beautifully stylish rooms, friendly service and fantastic location make this one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. True boutique hotel. Can see why it has No 1 ranking in Lisbon hotels. Specify if you want double bed as we had twin first if all but we were moved when double became available. Commentary decanter of Port in room was a lovely touch. Cannot recommend highly enough.

This hotel deserves all the best reviews it gets.We have stayed in many 5 star hotels around the world and would classify this as being probably the best hotel in Europe for sheer class and ambience.
We stayed for 4 nights in early October and were celebrating our 45th Wedding Anniversary. We had a lovely surprise of a bottle of Sparkling with pastries waiting in our room which was such a thoughtful gesture and made our celebrations more special!
Everything about the hotel from the spacious superior room to the service was absolutely wonderful-staff very attentive and pleasant without being overbearing.Special thanks to Ana,Raquel & Diogo Larnjo for all the information on the sightseeing, dining places, etc.and to Jefferson for sharing his wine knowledge with us plus the excellent service by him and all the rest of the staff that really made our stay a truly memorable one.We will certainly return to the hotel next time we are in Lisbon

Room Tip: We had a corner Superior room on 2nd floor which was spacious, quiet & very comfortable, but we u...

Just returned from Britania: great feelings, so nicely kept and people are just great !
Decent breakfasts (when included), interesting design. Only big problems: no pool, sauna. But there is a small pool in "sister" hotel 2 blocks from Britania.

There is no doubt that this a good hotel. Slightly out of the main centre but within a 10 to 15 minute walk and Ok if you like walking. The rooms are spotless and the beds are really comfy. No noise at all not only from outside but also no noise from the inside of the hotel either which is incredible. We didn't get the free port in our room like others said and breakfast was also extra. Staff were friendly and offered help when requested. There is no outside space to sit and this was a disappointment for me.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your comments following your recent stay with us. We are happy that overall you enjoyed your stay and we would like to precise just a few points.
We are one street behind Avenida da Liberdade (former Passeio Publico in the XVIII century) which is consider Lisbon’s main boulevard and where all the best national and international brands have their shops. In our block we have shops like Louis Vuitton and Prada, and Cartier that just opened on the block next to ours.
The bottle of Port in the room and breakfast included in the rate, depends on the type of tariff you choose. Concerning the outside space, we have two terrace rooms and one suite where you can seat outside, but unfortunately we don’t have any outside public place.
Hoping to have the opportunity of welcoming you again in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo
