“Nice hotel in good location”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

This was a nice hotel with a great breakfast. The staff were all very friendly and available to help when needed. The room was spacious and the free wifi appreciated. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant Rubro two doors down - tapas style. Well located and easy to walk around or catch a bus. We needed to leave a night early due to train strikes and this was easily catered for. The room was quiet and the balcony with chair and table a nice touch - too cold to lie on the sun lounges though they looked nice.

Often in Europe hotel rooms are small or if they are large you pay for them dearly. But the Britania Hotel offers beautifully spacious rooms at a reasonable price. Then when you add the outstanding personal service by every member of the staff, the location one block off the main boulevard in Lisbon, the great buffet breakfast (which runs until noon and ideal after a late night of Fado) and the ambiance of a quiet boutique hotel, it doesn't get any better. This was our first trip to Lisbon and the Britania helped to make our visit superb. On our next trip to Lisbon the Britania will be our first stop.

Room Tip: All rooms are equal.

I hate to give this a 3/5, but just have to be honest. Stayed in a double room, 2nd floor. Positives:
- Friendly staff
- Evening reception-lady was very charismatic, warm & welcoming.
- Dining lounge was finished to an exceptional standard; beautiful cream coloured furnishing and styling. The ambient light was perfect. Chopin and Beethoven at just the right background level.
- You felt like the staff wanted you there; appreciated your stay, unlike a lot of other hotels.
- Big room with character. Appropriate, periodic high ceilings.
- Gigantic bed (possibly two doubles put together. Don't care - didn't feel like two beds).
- Nice selection of complimentary tea.
- Complimentary red wine and chestnuts (special November occasion).

Some bad stuff:
- There's a door just inside the entrance to the room. It appears to be a common door to the neighbouring room. That's a problem in itself if curious guests like myself don't realise where it leads and think "wow, a door! Lets see if it can be opened", thus disturbing the neighbours with knob noise. But the noise transmission through it was so strong. At around 4am on one of the mornings, I was woken up by the very prominent noise of the female neighbour vomiting violently (probably too good a night out). This was most unsettling, and couldn't sleep much after that. It was so loud and clear, almost like someone in our own bathroom.
- The bathroom had a faint smell of stale urine; the type of odour that is very stubborn and difficult to remove.
- With the door between the bedroom and the room's "porch" area, it wouldn't close properly, and the knob was very wobbly.
- The rooms entrance door wouldn't open properly! And had to really slam it to close it properly (making a big noise).
- Don't like the safe-storage system at all. Just pretty nervous having to carry a key the whole time, with a 75 euro fee if lost (especially with the notorious street thieves).
- On check-in, was never told that the room key had to be left at reception every time you exit the hotel. Then, the first evening when we did exit, the lady never stopped us to ask for the key. I really like the system, but just need to improve the staff communication on that point.
- When returning in the evening, the reception lady always remembered our room number, thus handing the key without asking for ID or the room card. It's a nice, homely touch. But surely a major security risk for many reasons. If I were given the wrong key, I could go to the wrong room, steal some items, return to the counter saying "oh, I got the wrong key".

I do recommend this hotel. But there are a few big issues there that guests should be aware of and that I think hotel management could resolve.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay with us.
Whilst we are very pleased to note that you enjoyed our welcoming staff, décor, ambiance and most part of our services, we are most concerned to read your disappointments.
The room you stayed in is a connecting room with independent doors in each of the rooms (there is an empty space between the 2 doors). Right now we are in a process of sound proofing this empty space which is the cause of amplifying some of the other room sounds.
We also apologize for the smell you felt in your bathroom which seems to have been caused by the sewage system in your room.
We have taken note of the other issues you mentioned and we are looking in to them in more detail.
We do sincerely hope that we will see you again in the near future and have the opportunity to offer you a totally satisfactory stay as it has been the case with the vast majority of our guests.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo

a wonderful Art Deco loocated just one street off the main street of Lisbon and right near a Metro stop and hop on hop off bus stop.
The rooms were elegantly decoreated and the Port wine that awaited us upon return at night was a pleasant surprise.
The open bar in afternoon allowed us to try some local drinks as well.
Breakfast included local delicacies and was a pleasure to eat.
The reception desk staff were excellent and made us very welcome.
A computer is available to priont boarding passes is available but using Internet Exploreer it was very slow, much faster using Safari.

A small boutique hotel in the historic centre of Lisbon. You could not wish for anything better!
This beautifully restored Art Deco hotel is just perfect. The rooms have both comfort and character. The staff are very welcoming and attentive. The breakfasts will satisfy most palates.
During the day, in the library, tea and cakes are available and you can treat yourself to a glass of port or ginja.
You will not find a better, more friendly or comfortable hotel in Lisbon.
As a boutique hotel it does not have a restaurant but there are several excellent restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The best is Solar dos Presuntos, about 6-8 minute walk. But don't go past it it is not very imposing from outside.
Don't miss it!

We stayed for a long weekend (3 nights) and booked on the basis of the Art Deco building and the great Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed.

From the moment we checked in to the moment we left the service was perfect. The location is excellent, a few minutes walk to plenty of good places to eat and lots of shops. It is literally 3 minutes from Avenida Metro station...come out of the Metro, walk down the road where Louis Vitton is and the hotel is the road first on the left.

The staff were excellent, the lady on reception was very friendly, helpful and a wealth of information. The breakfast was relaxed with a good range of quality food, perfect for a day of sightseeing. The Wi-fi in the hotel was excellent and the finishing touches like Molton Brown toiletries was a nice touch.

The actual room was beautiful with amazing attention to detail especially if you are a fan of Art Deco. We had a superior room and even had our own lobby area which was stunning. Plenty of practical solutions like control of the rooms from your bed and huge wardrobe space.

Would highly recommend this hotel and will return.
