York House is a perfect location for either a peaceful stay or as a place to stay if you want to go on partying late. Lovely hotel with graceful and very helpful staff. The decor is a bit run down but it's part of the charm. I would stay here again and recommend it my friends too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.

I am really sorry but the hotel has to be renewed. The status of the bathrooms of my room was terrible. Old and not so clean, there were also some ants . The location is nice but it could not be considered for sure a 4 stars hotel. To reach the lobby there are 50 steps without any lift!!! The room was really old and not so clean. The staff is nice and kind but i will not come back again probably.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.
Since July 1st 2014, York House Lisbon has changed hands and is writing the next exciting part of its 135 years History.
We have started a deep and global renovation program, with the Restaurant, the Lobby and the Rooms and Bathrooms being renovated and upgraded.
We will make sure this program ends as soon as possible, in order to provide our guests with the best possible travel experience in this old 17th charming Convent.
We would be very pleased to welcome you again as you would notice the very high quality of service we are returning to, as one of Lisbon's oldest 4 star hotels.
Best regards,
The Management,

This is tough one to write. I have stayed at York House 3-4 times in the past 5 years. It's an old converted convent, authentic and characterful - in a good location just a short walk from the city centre. It has never been a model of good service, facilities or catering, but the building and courtyard more than compensated for this - until now..

The deluxe room we reserved which (was not inexpensive) although large with some nice original features (wooden ceiling, stone floor) was dirty and badly in need of repair. In places it was really difficult to feel comfortable - particularly the bathroom which has lots of blackened grouting around the bath and sink. All the stone floors and most of the doors and walls were dirty and not a single rug to create any sense of warmth. The double bed was small with a poor quality mattress. This could not be a case of shabby chic - it's simply shabby!

The staff at reception are pleasant but in general this hotel seems to have totally lost its direction - we waited in the courtyard for a pre-dinner drink for 10 mins trying to catch the attention of staff before giving up. It's really sad to see a hotel that was one of my favourite places lose it's way so badly.

Once you have climbed a long staircase to the central courtyard (there is no lift), you feel you are in an oasis of peace in the city. Yet this is a surprising quarter of the city. During the day, the trams and buses take you everywhere you need to go but they stop at about 9pm. So if you want to go downtown or return from downtown you are dependant on taxis. They are cheap at around 5-10 euros, so that is not necessarily a big deal.

The hotel is atmospheric. The air-conditioning is very good but the staff like to clank their buckets at around 5.30 in the morning...

The bar and restaurant were closed on Monday and Tuesday. Luckily there are several atmospheric bars and restaurants in the neighbourhood (name check the Tunel do Santos), however this is a rather seedy part of town. Despite the grand palace (now an art museum) and the embassies, many buildings in this street are either seedy or actually dilapidated or derelict, which lends the area a threatening air after night, although there was little evidence of any real threat.

In short a nice place to relax in but I think you can be closer to the action and have just as good a time.

Enjoyed our first stay ( 4 years ago) so much we decided to come back again. This time the service is not so good and the staff don't seem very interested. Breakfast is good - an extensive buffet - but not quite as good as it was before. Bedrooms are air conditioned. Our room looked down onto the courtyard garden which is very pretty and where breakfast is served. The courtyard also has a large sofa, great for lounging in the sun. The hotel is near Santos station which makes it easy for day trips to the beach.

I was here from the 3rd-5th April during a business stay. The service was outstanding as I had a lot of difficulties with my work, and they were so kind to help me;)
The food at the restaurant was delicious! And the breakfast kept me going the entire day:)
Would definitely come back :)

We stayed 4 nights and had a wonderful visit. We loved the atmosphere and the staff were excellent: they were good humoured, efficient and very keen to ensure that we had a good time. We had planned to eat out every night, but the Manager was so good at introducing us to a very good range of dishes and excellent wines that we ate there every night.
