Lovely hotel, beautiful building, in a great district -- nice buz, but not too touristy. Service was very friendly and efficient, but more in the dignified and slightly formal manner typical of this part of the world. Hotel breakfast was one of the better we've had. The bar on the third floor looks out over the estuary -- stunning, great way to while away the early evening. Next door is the important Janelas Verdes Museum, for wh9ich the hotel gave us a free entry voucher. Transport from here is easy as. If you have misgivings after reading the adverse review earlier, I'd say ignore it. Plenty of really nice family-run restaurants nearby. Excellent hotel in every way.

Room Tip: ask for the river side of the building.

My husband and I spent four nights at this wonderful hotel in Lisbon. Not only was the hotel beautifully decorated, but the service was wonderful and the breakfasts were delicious! Our room was very big and comfortable and we had a sitting room as well. The location is out of the center of the city but the bus comes right outside the door and the train and tram station is within walking distance. Although it is a small hotel, there was a desk clerk on duty 24 hours which was very helpful for as as we got in very late and had to check out very early. We want to return someday to Lisbon and I wouldn't even consider looking for a different hotel!

It's like staying at some rich nobles manor 300 years ago. It really doesn't feel like a hotel, but more like a home. One of my favourite things was the breakfast in a beautieful little courtyard, or maybe having a drink in the library(yes they have a library with a gorgeous balcony!). The coolest thing by far was their "honesty bar" which basically means that you help youself and just write down what you took. It gives the added impression that you're staying with a friend, rather than in a hotel. This is the best hotel stay i've had in my life. It's far from luxurious in the sense of having a pool, spa, widescreen TV in you room and bathroom, but it has style and it takes them the whole way!

When you arrive in Lisbon you will be met with heat, a busy buzz and the pushing and shoving of shoppers, tourists and locals. The scent of the ocean hits your nostrils at the same time as the stench of an alley way as you pass. There are many sides to Lisbon and Janelas Verdes offers you a small haven to contrast your adventure filled days. It is easy to access by bus, tram, tourist shuttle or by foot. We generally wandered into the city centre, passing little coffee shops and stopping for a sweet snack or cold water.

Janelas Verdes is a welcoming place with 24hr concierge, who will call your airline three times a day to chase missing luggage, who will welcome you to the shared library with a water view and help yourself 'honesty' bar and will show you to the quaint breakfast courtyard downstairs.

Value for money and a great experience this hotel will reward you by being close to at least two (tried and tested) restaurants for dinner and a modern bar overlooking the lights of the dock, just past the Ancient Museum next door!

Room Tip: Be sure to specify a double bed or your snuggling will stretch across two singles. We were in a roo...

With no restaurant the Janelas Verdes would probably never acquire 4 star status but it offers much more than that in quirky comfort and different values.
This is like being invited into a rich uncles home, an uncle you don't know we'll but values your family connections.
Our Room was spacious and, in many establishments have been classified as a junior suite. From my point of view the only thing missing was a 'fridge' in which to keep drinks cool.
The fact there is no restaurant encourages one to explore the many eateries in the locality and so enriches the cultural experience.
This may be a pity a the courtyard where breakfast is served is delightful and would no doubt make a great dining area illuminated for evening eating.
The great joy is the ' Library' which is like some room from a bygone era and casts an eye over a working part of Lisbon & something to be revered not put down.
There is a bus stop r gift next door but taxis are not expensive.
Going to Lisbon and don't need the latest in hotel up market ? This is a great choice for those looking for something a little bit different.

Room Tip: A superior room is probably worth the extra

We ended up in Portugal with no hotel reservations. Quick call to Amex travel services landed us at the Intercontinental in Porto - fantastic experience, Ritz Carlton/Four Seasons caliber. Having had such a great experience we asked the concierge to help with a similar hotel in Lisbon - which is how we ended up at the Janelas Verdes. Let me qualify this by saying that I typically stay at 5 star hotels (many paid for by work) so my viewpoint comes as such. When the taxi dropped us off in front of the hotel (wife and 16 month old son in tow) I thought I was being punk'd. It is right next door to the Museum as many have suggested, but that doesn't make it a great, or even particularly good location. Strike one. The attendant was rude and suggested that we might not be allowed to stay because we had a child with us - asked us why the Intercontinental hadn't indicated that when making our reservation. Strike two. Eventually agreed to let us go to our room - which was a dump. Strike three. I'll take a courtyard Marriott 10 times out of 10 over this place. It seemed like such a paradox to see Molton Brown products in a bathroom that looked like it belonged in a hostel. The bed reminded me of the drive up motels I used to frequent with my parents in Catskills in the 70's. Dragged our bags downstairs and out the door. First time I have ever walked out of a hotel without staying, and I've stayed in some margin places.

Dear Guest,
We were most concerned with your review. We are very sorry that you didn't like our premises and left with such a bad image of us and our location.
As Janelas Verdes is a small mansion from the XVIII century, with 29 unique rooms, which limits our capacity to accommodate extra beds. It’s essential that extra beds are required at the time of reservation.
Our aim is to offer a traditional ambiance where our guests feel welcome.
We are very sorry that your experience was not as positive as many others on this site, but thank you for sharing it with us.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo

Had a lovely short stay here. Friendly and helpful staff, nice comfortable room with good size bathroom. We enjoyed unhurried breakfasts in the courtyard and evening drinks in the lounge with its views looking out across the water. The location presented no problems at all and we walked around the immediate area at night to try a local restaurant which was excellent and were not aware of any noticeable smells. We often prefer the smaller boutique style of Hotel and found this to be a very nice one. The port was a nice touch and we took this up to the library/lounge and shared with friends.( It was refilled the following day) One very minor criticism is that there are no coffee/tea facilities in the room itself although they are available just downstairs or in the lounge area.
All in all a very nice hotel.
