“A great intro to Lisbon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2012

Our first time in Lisbon and we chose this hotel because of the reviews and photos. It did not disappoint. Unfortunately due to flight delays we did not arrive until 4am but staff were helpful, courteous and friendly even at that time. Reception staff were knowledgable and helpful hroughout our stay. Only caution is that it is not best placed for walking into city. Be prepared to take trams, buses or taxis which are all cheap and reliable.

Just fantastic in every way. Rooms are lovely, library and balcony so comfy and relaxing, an 'honesty bar', friendly and helpful staff, free port in the rooms, etc. A welcome and relaxing feel - unlike 'chain' hotels. I have stayed in many, many hotels over the years and this (along with the Shangri-La in Bangkok) is my all time favourite. Just wonderful.

We stayed four nights and paid a little more for a really spacious room. Quiet air con and comfy bed meant we were always late down for breakfast. But they serve it until noon so never any rush! And breakfast is pretty good too. In fact nothing is too much trouble here.

Initially we thought it was not in a brilliant location, but a little research revealed excellent restaurants within 5mins walk. Santos tram station is nearby and buses stop outside the door. And public transport here is really cheap.

As others have said, the Library has amazing views, an honesty bar and there's free wifi everywhere. I'm a writer and found it a great place to drink beer, munch a few pre-dinner nibbles and knock out a few hundred words before dinner each evening.

I plan to return . . . . . and that really says it all.

The best part of this hotel is the library and the top floor terrace: amazing view of the city and the perfect place to wind down after a day of sightseeing. Rooms are on the smaller size but very clean. Location is okay but not central.

My wife and I spent three nights at the hotel end of July. It corresponds to previous reviews and I must say that we were delighted by our stay whilst visiting Lisbon for the first time. Taxi from the airport was quick (20-25 minutes) to reach the hotel.

The hotel is small (that what makes it quiet and relaxing), has a beautiful staircase (but has an elevator as well), a bit far from the center but if you are not afraid to walk there are plenty of taxis that the hotel reception can get for you very efficiently and quickly. Next door is the embassy of Luxembourg, and embassies of France and Belgium are also nearby. The street is relatively quiet and that is likely due to the fact that bars, restaurants and shops are located mostly in other parts. There is a wine tavern right in front of the hotel but we had no chance to try it.
We had a very cosy room at second floor, facing the river, with a very confortable bed, big cabinets, a huge bathroom and a free bottle of nice Port! The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet outside in the small inner court at the back (unless wheather is not permitting), surrounded with nice plants and a fountain, with classical eggs, bacon and sausages, and limited but good selection of local cheeses and pastries (pasteis that you must taste!). Morning coffee is very good but this is Portugal and all coffees we drunk at different locations within the city during our stay were really great and so much better than in many big cities in Europe.
The library at the 3rd floor is really well decorated and definitely a charming piece of the hotel. The view facing the river is very nice and the courtesy bar will satisfy anyone looking for a good piece of drink before or after meals.

We had very good dinners in the city and will recommend the best seafood restaurant we had for a long time ("Sea me") and the best "family" restaurant ("Pinocchio") ressembling a lot what you can easily find in cities like Rome or Barcelona. We had a good lump of sangria (white and red), and also tried the famous Vino Verde for the first time and were impressed by the freshness and quality of this wine (despite the higher content in alcohol as compared to regular white wines). Return to the hotel was of course done by taxis whose affordable fares are no match to other big european cities.

All in all we had a very good time in Lisbon and would without any hesitation highly recommend As Janelas Verde for a city trip or even longer times, especially if you are looking for calm and charm. There are probably good and less good moments during the year to visit Lisbon but summer seems to be a pretty good one. Our impression of the city was that some areas are less maintained and would need a bit of refurbishing (especially many buildings with wall tiles that must have been so pretty at initial). No doubt that crisis in EU has struk cities like Lisbon. Despite this, there are many other areas where you feel the charm of the city and the friendliness of the local people. A must visit in EU, definitely.

By far, one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. Outstanding view from the roof garden, superb decoration of common areas, every comfort in the room, staff extremely professional, smiling and competent. Would advise it to anyone going to Lisbon. Right next to the Museu de Arte Antigua, the hotel offers free entry to it. I wrote a positive remark on their guestbook, and the GM wrote me back thanking me for my appreciation. This shows they really care about guests' reviews. Only two small negative points: the reception area is rather small and it is uncomfortable for the staff to work behind such small desk and to access the garage you need to be accompanied by staff because the elevator to the garage is operated via a key. I am sure this last aspect could be improved. Anyway, do not miss it !
