“A Gorgeous Hotel”
Reviewed May 10, 2007

Despite it being on the expensive side , the hotel earns all of its stars. The concierge was more helpful than ANY other hotel I have ever stayed in. Restaurnats off premises can't do enough to please LAPA guests.. The only drawback is its location. It is far from anything of interest. THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE WITHOUT GETTING INTO A TAXI. Breakfast at 65 dollars for two is inexcusable...Otherwise ....Highly recommended. I would go back.

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful hotel! We had two rooms and both were grand and spacious, bathrooms were elegant, roomy and stocked with toiletries and thick towels. The setting was spectacular. Staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. We would heartly recommend this hotel.

Great hotel (read all the other reviews) but (a) not a great location--you definitely need a taxi anywhere you go but since most destinations including the centre of town are only 3.50 euros, it's not a hardship (the one exception is the Museum of Antiquities which is only a 5-min stroll away); but (b) internet access should be free. The fact that they charged per 24 hrs. for in-room service seemed unnecessary given the high daily room charge. Would definitely stay here again albeit aware of the drawbacks. By the way, excellent security given it's in the heart of the embassy district.

Added bonus: their wine-by-the-glass list in the bar is excellent and a very useful way to get to know good quality Portugese wines.

  • Liked — Beautiful hotel; very comfortable rooms; nice common rooms; lots of space
  • Disliked — Its location -- residential area so nothing in near neighborhood

My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the New Year's holiday. Excellent location and service. Highly recommended. They are free to use our phrase about living in the "Lapa Luxury."

I stayed at this hotel for two nights prior to a Transatlantic cruise from Lisbon. It was booked by my travel agent as part of a package and I am not sure what I paid for it, but it was worth every penny. The hotel is a palace built in 1870 for a Portugese nobleman and has been tastefully remodeled and added on to.
(From the front it must look the same as it did when first built.)
The rooms are large and expectionally well furnished. I was on the second floor and had a terrace overlooking the lovely 100 year old garden and the beautiful pool. The bathroom is large, well appointed with thick towels, incredible toiletries and a great tub and shower. (It is all marble so do be careful).
Breakfast was provided and you could have it either in the breakfast room or in your room. I ate three breakfasts in the Breakfast room and they are delicious and plentiful with fresh fruits and yoghurts, hot dishes, pastries, juices, and eggs prepared to order if you want them. There is a Restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. While excellent and highly regarded it is pricey. (Lunch cost me over 30 Euros and that was just entree, tip and mineral water.). The concierge will direct you to excellent restaurants within your price range.
The public areas are lovely and there is an indoor pool with changing rooms that is available to all guests. The spa area is remarkably well priced given the quality and a "jet lag treatment" which consisted of a 20 minute hydrotherapy and 1 hour massage was only 80 Euros. (if you go ask for Phillipe for the massage of a lifetime).
The gardens are lovely and be sure to take time to see them if you are there. There is a nice outdoor pool, but it was too chilly to use it, although it is heated.
Staff is very helpful (the desk staff escorts you to your room and it explains it too you), and the concierge staff excellent. Other staff such as waitstaff and bar staff excellent and unobtrusive.
While the Lapa Palace may be out of the price range for most of us, if you or your agent can get a good deal, go for it. You won't regret it
