I stayed at the Avenida palace twice ( four nights total) on a three week trip through Portugal in May. After a long and sleepless flight from the west coast of the US, I arrived in Lisbon tired and bedraggled. As I stepped through the doors of the Avenida Palace in my wrinkled travel wear and comfort sandals, I thought , "Oh dear, I am seriously underdressed for this place!" My trepidation was immediately eased when I was greeted by a smiling young man who whisked my heavy bags from my hands and ushered me to the front desk... And thus began my love affair with this gorgeous hotel! I had expected the sort of "faded elegance" one often encounters in old, stately hotels throughout Europe...you know, the tattered drapes and the dusty carpeting. Not so here: everything is sparkling, elegant, tasteful, and designed to pamper the traveler. A bowl of grapes and a bottle of water welcomed me in a lovely, quiet room, with wifi that actually worked! Scented sachets in the closet, bathrobes, slippers ...what more could a girl want? Breakfast? Fabulous buffet in a gorgeous room overlooking the square with efficient and friendly staff. Good dining advice from the concierge for excellent food nearby at moderate prices. This is not a budget friendly hotel, as my significant other noted when he arrived during my second stay at the hotel; however, he conceded that in the often gritty surroundings of Lisbon, the hotel was a delightful respite from noise and bustle thanks in part to incredible double-paned windows. A lovely series of free piano recitals was offered in the sumptuous lounge during our stay. Just a tip: the Aerobus #1 (€3,50) drops you a few steps from the entrance (you will see the big rooftop sign, but walk around the ground floor lingerie shop, take a sharp right into a small parking area to find the main entrance). A perfect location next to the historic Rossio train station and other central city sights. Book directly on line with hotel for some added perks like a 20% discount in the bar.
