Well worth the climb to get here. We spent a whole morning just wandering around the battlements enjoying the superb views over the city from every angle.

We took a cab (cabs are relatively inexpensive in Lisbon). The views from the castle grounds, which sits at the top of a hill, are spectacular... the city, the harbor. And the castle itself, dating back a thousand years or more, is interesting even without the views! There is ample opportunity to climb the walls (hang on to your children!). There are refreshment stands and even a full service restaurant within the castle walls. This site is on every Top 10 list of Lisbon sites, and deservingly so!

Castles are on the high ground and St. George is no exception. Don't bother signing up for the tour. Go to the easily accessible ramparts by the entry gate and walk along the battlement for great views of Lisbon. Then have a coffee and custard at a cafe!

I truly recommend a visit to the St. George's Castle. The view over the city is magnificent. It is situated in the Castelo bourough.

Take a walk up from the tram no. 28 stop. It is breathtaking. Good value for money stalls and cafe's are a stones throw away from the entrance to the castle. The usual tourist trap is to be expected in these places but this is different.

Walk the ancient walls and see a spectacular view of Lisbon. Afterwards take a stroll down to the town and see all the places you saw from up there. Well worth it.
