the biggest private collection you can see in museums. every thing is there ( paintings, furniture, carpets, sculptures, silver work, glass work.... ), the clocks are still working, having the right time of today. every thing is so rich, that you feel you are in a palace of a king. If you are to visit one museum in Lisbon, this is the one.

“Fantastic collection and great cafe make for a great afternoon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

The Gulbenkian Collection and Foundation is a must see. Funded by early oil pioneer Calouste Gulbenkian, the museum is wonderful. The cafe features outdoor seating and great food as well as wine. The view is very nice. People chill out here during visits. The gift shop has great books and prints. I took several large posters home to the US on my first visit thirty years ago. I highly recommend you visit!

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

One of the best museums I have ever visited, personal touch of the billionare owner visible in each one of the incredible, hand- picked pieces (from ancient greek coins, through real persian art to Lalique jewelllery) you'll find in this collection. Loved it!

“An amazing museum with a rich and beautiful collection! Not tiring to go around since you can see it within two hours!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2013

This is a great museum which exhibits the collection of Calouste Gulbenkian enhanced with additional items bought by the museum afterwards.
Rich collection of oriental art as well as paintings! Paintings are remarkably beautiful (pieces from Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Gainsborough, Corot, Monet, Renoir etc).
Although I am not a fan of Chinese art, I was FASCINATED by the pieces exhibited (beautiful vases and other objects). It is amazing the fact that museum exhibits a variety of ojects and is not focused only on one kind of art. There are from textiles to tiles, from domestic objects to statues, clothes, coins etc! Very important and unique collection by Rene Lalique (mainly jewellery) is also exhibited in a separate room.
If you get an audio guide is very useful (at least the one in English language that I used provided short, to the point and not tiring long descriptions on the objects). After the visit you can rest and have coffee and sweets outside at the beautiful veranda of the museum cafeteria!

The only thing I would maybe suggest is to enhance the objects for sale at the bookshop. There are mainly books and very few other little things. By selling more things would also bring more money to the foundation.

I wouldn't hesitate to visit the museum for a second time! A must when in Lisbon in my opinion.
