Take tram 12 if the queue for tram 28 is too long. Go early in the morning for no queues. Get off tram and walk around.

It is fun to walk across the streets, see the trams, the shops. It can be tiring though, there are many inclinations.

At dinner one evening our waiter suggested we go the the Barrio Alto for Fado music. There are numerous intimate places within this neighborhood that feature Fado. We found one easily, and sat at a small table drinking aged tawney oporto. 20 minutes on...twenty minutes off we listened to wonderful, soulful Fado. There were the traditional two male guitar players, and two female singers. It was one of the highlights of our visit.

there are many ups and downs in Lisbon and this place is no exception, wear your trainers and be prepared to climb but enjoy the views along the way

Although you can walk up this area, it is better to take a taxi there, then amble around the shops, restaurants and squares, and afterwards just walk slowly downhill.
