The best meal of our recent ten-day European trip was a Saturday lunch at Ibo, overlooking the Tagus. Our table of three included a nephew & niece on their third visit to Lisbon plus one beloved aunt, who has spent nearly 60 years in Portugal and understands its traditional cooking very well. Our meals were outstanding and refined, yet the service itself was warm and unpretentious. Our choices included Samosas Goa style (appetizer), Zambezi Roasted Chicken, Grilled Tiger Prawns with piri piri sauce, Roasted kid with sautéed sprouts (entrees), and for dessert Caramelized banana with “pasteis de nata” ice cream and sesame seed brittle. What a fine account of modern Portuguese cooking, drawing on the flavors of Mozambique and Goa to great effect. Chef João Pedro Pedrosa checked on our table in the course of lunch, and we chanced to meet him again while we were leaving. He seems as modest and genuine as he is talented, explaining the chicken recipe to my husband as if casually exchanging tips with a fellow chef. If this restaurant were in Manhattan, it would be as crowded as Harold Dieterle’s Kin Shop, for similar reasons. We wish Chef Pedrosa continued success.

A group of 5 of us dined at IBO which is close to the train station by the waterfront in Lisbon. We were there for lunch. Although it appeared the waiter understood perfect English our orders were mishandled and I believe we were charged for more than what we received. Nevertheless, the food was excellent and it made the whole thing worthwhile. The ambiance of the restaurant along with the view made this a very memorable experience.

Great views over the river in a sophisticated, modern setting; perhaps the ideal place to try a taste of Africa or, specifically, Mozambique. Nothing too radical about king prawns in deep fried filo with lemon mayo, but they were cooked to perfection and didn't remotely resemble the supermarket or chain restaurant offerings, i.e. they tasted of prawn. Mushrooms stuffed with creamy goat's cheese were also good. Mains included a sensational fish and coconut curry which was well spiced but let the flavour and freshness of the fish come through, and roast kid, which was soft and unctuous and utterly delicious. Nice wines and great service which unfortunately fell apart when the place suddenly got busy after 10 o'clock. We would definitely go back, and hope for the full trip into puds and liqueurs next time, maybe in peak season.

Excellent fusion of Mozambique and Portuguese cooking. Spicy but not fiery. Modern restaurant with waterfront setting and views. Friendly staff.
