“Stunning views and comfortable accommodation in Lisbon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

I just returned from my trip to Lisbon and really enjoyed staying at THE HOUSE. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by friendly staff at the hotel who spoke English (in addition to other languages). She was so helpful introducing me to a layout of the city, giving me information on places to eat and things to do and see while in Lisbon. I also ran into the owner the second evening there and he is such a lovely and hospitable person!

The hotel was immaculately clean, which is terrific, and offers free wi-fi (although the signal was a little weak in my room, the "girls room", so I primarily used it downstairs in the lobby area).

My room was quite comfortable, offered plenty of storage space for clothes and had a small view of the oceanfront. The best view by far, as seen in the photos, is from the rooftop where they have sofas and tables and a no-host honor bar to enjoy beverages all time of day. It is wonderful watching the sun rise and set from atop this lovely rooftop!

Breakfast was included in my rate, and it was a nice spread that offered yogurt, breads to toast, meats and cheeses, cereal and eggs to order from the cook, if you wanted. The breakfast room, like the hotel rooms, are sunny and well lit and nicely decorated with local artwork from Lisbon.

The hotel itself is about a mile from the downtown, which I preferred because it was so quiet and reasonably priced. It is so easy to pay for an all-day transportation ticket (at most tobacco stands) for only €6 / all day and ride the tram #28 (like a cable car) from the basilica 2 minutes from the hotel directly into the downtown area.

I enjoyed my stay here very much and would recommend it to anyone wanting a good rate in a safe area with a very clean room who doesn't mind being a little bit out of the city center.

My main note to guests upon arrival: While taking the metro from the airport was incredibly easy with only one transfer, finding the hotel when exiting the metro was not super easy. Also, all of the streets and sidewalks in Lisbon are cobblestone, which makes carting even roller luggage not easy. What should have been a 20 minute walk took me approximately 40 minutes because I got a little lost and my iphone maps stopped working. For airport transfers, I suggest paying €15 to €20 for a taxi -- much less hassle!

Room Tip: I was a solo traveler and stayed in the "girls room" -- which had two single beds. There i...

We spent two nights at The House, Lisbon, in May 2013.

The House is located in a good neighbourhood with easy access to the tram.

It is neat and clean and well equipped - nice decor. The Breakfast is excellent and you are free to have breakfast (including bacon and eggs to order !) whenever you wake up !

Francisco and Catarina were wonderful hosts who made us feel at home ! They helped us plan our short visit around Lisbon as well as our drive down the Algarve coast ! We regret not having been able to spend at least another night at The House.

Lisbon is a charming city - wonderful people and we whole heartedly recommend all of you visiting Lisbon to stay at The House.

-Great breakfast
-Excellent, quiet and clean room (we had the master bedroom..very large with a great terrace)
-Wonderful and kind personnel who give you plenty of good advices
.
..and Lisbon is even better than Barcelona: great food & wine, chill people, cheap, nice spots, lots to see and visit, sun, ...

I can only recommend this B&B and a visit to Lisbon to everyone!

EXCELLENT, will omit many details, would simply be repeating what others have said. For my wife and me the location was ideal. Quiet yet not far from sights and sites, all easily reached by tram and bus. We used stored-value transit cards provided by our hosts, topping-up daily as needed. Our preference for evening meals is inexpensive relatively light food, more often fish than meat. Francisco and Catarina have an excellent suggestion, very near: "O Lavrador", Euro 20 - 30 for 2 including house wine. Just as near and also excellent, in our experience, is "Flor da Estrela" at Rua de Joao de Deus, 11, just opposite Basilica Estrela -- smaller and slightly more elegant atmosphere but food and prices comparable. For serious eaters, foodie Francisco has many suggestions, some nearby, and other guests said his suggestions were excellent. But we enjoyed the more modest "Restaurante Madragoa" at Rua da Esperanca, 134. There one is served by Antonio while his wife Christina cooks. Roughly Euro 30 - 45 for 2 including wine. "Madragoa" is located downhill from The House in an interesting area bounded by the route of Tram 25E and Avenida D. Carlos I. Part of the route of Tram 25E follows Rua Buenos Aires, on which street at 25-A and 30-A is pastelaria "Cristal", recommended by Francisco. Very good! And in Belem, where a queue of many dozens waits outside the guidebook-recommended pastelaria (whose name we don't have) on Rua de Belem, there is an excellent nearby alternative pastelaria "A Chique de Belem" at R. da Junqueira, 524, opposite the Tram 15E stop just one before Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

Definately enjoyed our stay at The House. It is located in a really quaint area with lots of interesting old buildings and only a short walk to Basilica da Estrela and its lovely gardens opposite. The famous Tram 28 also stops just by the Basilica linking with many famous sights and your visit would not be complete with at least one trip on this iconic mode of transport. The House itself is absolutely immaculate and beautifully presented and really can not be faulted. Great staff with lots of suggestions what to see and where to eat and would specially mentioned Caterina who was particularly helpfull! You must visit the restaurant Clube de Jornalistas which is just round the corner for a fantasic meal in a unique old building. Would certainly stay here again.

This is pretty much a family run place with great staff who genuinely care that you have a good stay. Francisco, Catarina and Pedro gave us excellent information about their city and the rest of the country. The House is in a lovely area with lots of atmosphere, quiet streets and old Lisbon charm. Its roof terrace has fabulous views of the city and the stunning Basilica Estrella a 5 minute walk away; also the place to catch the infamous 28 tram and don't miss a wander through the beautiful park. We found some great local places to eat within a 5 or 10 minute walk. It's a pretty easy amble to most of the districts around the city and there are loads of buses serving the area if you wander further. The House is a boutique style b&b based on the 4th floor (there is a lift) of a typical old Lisbon apartment block. Our room (called The Dressing Room) was spacious, immaculately clean, with a large comfortable bed with 4 pillows and additional cushions. We also had a private balcony with chairs and a table, you need to go on to their roof terrace for the views but it was nice to have the additional space with the room. The lovely folks who work here will lend you the use of a proper hair dryer for your stay rather than the useless low power things you get in large hotels. Loads of wardrobe and drawer space, a great bathroom with a good shower, good quality large towels and plenty of them and even super soft bathrobes; complimentary sachets of shampoo and bath gel. Air-con in the room, no in room safe but you can lock your door and you have the key. We padlocked our suitcase too for our valuables but everything felt 100% secure. Free wifi which was easily accessible from your room and pretty fast for downloading. Breakfast included which was a good selection and included eggs and bacon if you ask the staff for them. A small kitchen off the roof terrace which operates an honesty bar for cold drinks, wine, beers, some snacks and teas and coffee which you can help yourself to and record in the book to pay later at checkout. A comfortable communal living room on the main floor and another off the roof terrace. This is not a massive impersonal chain hotel like The Sheraton with loads of full time staff on hand all night long; it's a lovely small B&B run by a family and staff who take pride in what they do and who will go out of their way to help you if you have a problem or need any advice. You won't get that in faceless hotel chains but if you expect concierge and 4 people on a reception desk and room service, then book in to a large hotel and use your common sense...just don't expect as warm a welcome or as great a location as this. Stayed here for 3 nights when we arrived in Lisbon and liked the place and location so much that we stayed again for 1 night on our way back out of Portugal after driving round the country for 10 days. We had a hire car which we parked for free on the street outside but didn't use again til we left the city to drive across the country. If the walking up and down the often very steep streets of Lisbon wears you out, the taxis are pretty cheap and easy to flag down. A lovely place to stay in a beautiful city. I highly recommend it and easily give the owners and staff 10 out of 10 for their warm welcome and great conversation. Ask Francisco about local art galleries and antique shops...there are some really great places tucked away in these local streets. We loved it and would go back.

Room Tip: The Dressing room, spacious bright and sunlight streaming in from the balcony. It's an old build...

We stayed in Lisbon for 6 nights at the house in two different rooms. Francisco and his staff were excellent hosts. Breakfasts were fabulous. Staff were very helpful and made every effort to make our stay most enjoyable.
