“Nearly perfect”
Reviewed July 5, 2011

The hotel is in a quiet suburb but it is easy (and fun) to get downtown on the No 28 tram and taxis are not too expensive. The room was fine, a bit small but very clean. There is free WiFi. For continental Europe there was a reasonable choice of food for breakfast: cold meat, fruit, pastries, etc. The roof terrace was wonderful, it was great to relax with a cold drink after a hot day. There were, however, a few niggles. The air con is not yet working but the House has only one fan and whoever had it was hanging on to it. With daytime temperatures nudging 40 deg C it was too hot to sleep, even keeping the room shutters closed during the day. The shampoo in our bathroom wasn't replaced and I had to rummage round in a cupboard to find some more. The staff were very keen to help us find our way around Lisbon, but the advice wasn't always good. For example, we were told that the Zapping pre-pay transport card isn't valid on trains (it is), and that the quickest way to Rossio station (for Sintra) is the Metro to Rossio (it isn't - this involves two changes and Rossio isn't even the closest Metro station). We were also advised to go for one of the open air barbeques in Alfama. This turned out to be a massive rip off. Sardines, unidentified meat, salad, bread and cheap wine, with dirty cutlery and plates, cost 20EUR each. We should have checked the price before we ate, but it would have been nice if the hotel had warned us that Lisbon street food is not the bargain it is elsewhere in the world. These are minor niggles. We had a great time in Lisbon and the House has bags of style and charm, but good service needs just a bit more than that.

Hello everybody,

I would start by saying that we are certainly not in any suburb; the Lapa/Estrela district was developed after the 1755 earthquake and is at the center of the city, actually being one of the city's famous 7 hills; unlike for example Alfama, it has its own life and its own attractions, behond the purely touristic, and it allows you to feel how it is actually to live here.

The air con is on hold since November, due to reasons that surpass us. Fortunately it seems it will be installed on at least half TheHOUSE next week.

When we advise people on what to do and where to go, we take into consideration, not only the destination, but also the course as well. In fact the quickest way to get to Sintra is to take the subway to Entrecampos; the nicest way however, by a long margin, is to go to the Rossio station.

Concerning the Alfama dinner, we are not obviously responsible for the chosen place. However I stick by that recomendation: it is what the locals, our staff included, do. It is expensive for the quality of the food, in the same way that fado places are too, but you essencially go for the ambience and the fun of it. We are more than happy to help, as anyone can see by the vast majority of our reviews, but I don't think it is fair to judge us by the quality of the food served, or the price of it, in a place that wasn't even a specific recomendation; we just said to go there and sit wherever the guests fancied.

We welcome any reviews, as it is one very good way of improving; I am already taking measures to ensure that it will be better next time; I cannot however understand the fact that we are being given a 3 out of 5 in a review entitled "nearly perfect", especially given the fact that it seems many extraogenous factors influenced it negatively.

If you are considering staying with us, and have any doubts whatsoever, please don't hesitate to call me.

Best regards,
Francisco

We stayed here for 4 nights. Our ensuitre (Boys Room) room was very clean, airy and pleasant. Toiletries were provided and facecloths too. No in-room TV, radio, clock, or tea/coffee, but this is general in Europe. Hot and cold beverages were available at a charge. The host was friendly and helpful. We arrived very early, but this was AOK. The host was not on site at night. The area is old and interesting, but with dog poop part of the street environment. and there is a park and Estrella Basilica nearby. Lisbon has a slower pace of life, and is well worth a visit. My one complaint is that the website for this B&B concentrates on the concept of the former family home, whilst the reality is that it is takes up the upper floors of a large apartment building.

Dear Guest,

I am so glad you liked your stay here. However, as I don't really understand the last part of your review, I take this opportunity to clarify, not only you, but all future guests, in what concerns the history of TheHOUSE: our building was originally built by my grandfather in 1958 with the specific purpose of having a special house for him and his familly on top. That space was converted by me into what is now TheHOUSE. I made very few changes, as all three floors, including the terrace, were already part of the original design. Of course we built more bathrooms, and changed 3 living rooms into bedrooms, but all in all it is basically the same house where my father, uncles and aunts grew up. Perhaps that is why people feel so at home here. Hope you find this information helpful; in any case your review as made me think that having some pictures of how it used to be may make it easier for our guests to imagine how it used to be. Thanks for that!

Best regards,
Francisco

Stayed here with our retired friends for 2 nights. As everyone has said, the view from the rooftop terrace is amazing. They have everything arranged so you can sit inside, or outside with a drink & enjoy the view. Travelling in June before school is out, we found this B&B quiet,- we slept very well. Everyone spoke English & were very friendly and helpful. Francisco even had coffee with us at breakfast and answered our questions. We really appreciated his friendliness & helpfulness. The decor was so tasteful with professional art on the walls. We enjoyed the good breakfast before heading out for the day. We recommended this B&B to people we met in Salema who were traveling to Lisbon. Loved our stay.

Excellent service; the owners took extra time to help us with recommendations to restaurants, transportation and Lisbon highlights. Room was clean and comfortable, with great view. Location is close to transportation, including the famous tram 28. Loved the rooftop deck, where we could unwind with a drink, and meet other travelers. The view was incredible any time of day! We would stay again!

We had a very nice time at the house. The staff were amazing but we were disappointed to be banned from the roof top terrace on two consequtive nights because of parties, so make sure you trip does not coincide with a block booking. Breakfasts are ok but the same every day which makes it a bit dull after 6 days. We had a good room for traveling with small children and Francisco is getting Perspex protection around the handrail on the first floor which our 10 month old nearly toppled over onto the marble below. They have a lift so we could manage with a push chair and loads of luggage. They are a fountain of information, incredibly obliging, good value for money and have a beautiful location, right near major tram stops, the basilica and a magnificent park which has Jazz on a Sunday, and from bouncy castles to beer, with two great cafes. There is an Arabian restaurant nearby with belly dancers on a Saturday and great food. Its an easy ride on any tram into the centre and a cheap ride by taxi. Buy a travel pass from a kiosk, it's much cheaper. Try the pastries they are magnificent everywhere you go.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your feedback.
I take this opportunity to explain our policy concerning the terrace. Since the opening day that the terrace is open 24 hours a day for all guests. However, it is possible to rent it privately, especially if you are a guest. This has happened less than once a month since July 2010, when we opened. What happened in this particular case, was that we had two very big groups on consecutive days. Still, the terrace was only closed for the event itself (if I am not mistaken they were both at 8pm). In any case, from now on we will not rent the terrace on consecutive nights.
Thank you,
Francisco Cansado Carvalho

We have just come back from an AMAZING 3 day stay at TheHOUSE having had the most perfect experience! As the co-organiser of a group of 10 for a friend's sophisticated hen weekend, the previous reviews for TheHOUSE helped me make the decision to contact this boutique B&B which seemed the perfect place for our mini break ... and TheHOUSE really did not disappoint. From the very start in speaking to the owner, Francisco, I knew we had picked the right place. After lots and lots of questions, emails and phone calls (thank you for being patient with me!), our group arrived in Estrela to find a modest front entrance in a residential apartment block but discovered a beautiful boutique B&B on the 4th floor. TheHOUSE is an extremely modern and chic B&B with gorgeous rooms and very comfy beds. There are some lovely quirky touches like the small stained glass window in the lving room, the Singer sewing machine at the top of the stairs and all the rooms being named after an area in Lisbon. The spiral staircase is a fab focal point and provides a great backdrop for pictures. But the cherry on the cake has to be the roof top terrace with the breathtaking views of Lisbon! You can happily sit on the terrace to soak up the views and sunshine in the most relaxing and peaceful setting. For an extra 5 euros per person, you can also enjoy breakfast on the terrace which is highly recommended. Having organised for a private dinner to be held for our group on the terrace for the first evening, it was a fantastic setting to watch the sunset, enjoy champagne and a 3 course dinner (the typical Portuguese dishes on the menu were delicious) and settling into the cosy seats afterwards to host some hen party games, topping off the evening with a great cocktail. The terrace dinner was organised brilliantly from start to finish and complemented our 'Sex And The City Chic' themed evening perfectly! The B&B is in a great location to explore this pretty city with the famous number 28 Tram only a few minutes walk away. With the friendly and impeccable service that Francisco, Pilar and the rest of the team deliver along with such a uniquely designed B&B and the stunning views from the terrace, it's easy to see why in such a short space of time, TheHOUSE has been voted as number 1 B&B on Tripadvisor.com. If you're in search of a place to stay in central Lisbon with a personal touch, there cannot be a better B&B in Lisbon than TheHOUSE - it is suitable for all types of travellers, not just for large groups, and provides brilliant value for money. Francisco/Pilar/Maria - a huge huge thank you to everyone for ensuring everything went smoothly and pulling out all the stops, especially for the Friday night terrace dinner, even with the last minute change of plan. We had a brilliant stay and just fell in love with your B&B. All the girls have never been to Lisbon before but would love to come back again in the future, and I know that TheHOUSE will be the very first place all the girls would call! Your help, local knowledge and hospitality was simply outstanding.

Francisco, Pilar and Maria, thank you very much for the great welcome!
Lisbon was much better having The House to go back at the end of our marvellous days.
We agree with all the reviews until now and we'll love to return to this hotel some day.
