Went their with my wife and two friends after visiting the castle. The castle was good but the wine wine was better. Spent 3 hours here and had to catch a taxi home as friend was smashed having tried white red and port. All jokes aside this is a great place for a drink. Rua is very knowledgable and happy to advise. We had a great day. 112 Euro 5 beers and plent of bread, cheese and chorizo etc.

Accidentally discovered this fantastic wine bar after visiting the castle. The owner and wine afficionado specializes in Portuguese wine. He speaks 5 languages so he is able to assist you in your wine selections. This is not a restaurant but it does have exellent cheeses and meats to eat while enjoying your glass of wine.

First of all this is not a restaurant so we could not eat a real meal. That is a fact. As a tapas bar we dont find it up to the standards. The wine list is not interesting. Misplaced and over rated. A trap to tourists? Maybe, as we were tho only portupuese couple.

Dear Mariana,

Thank you for your review and we're sorry your experience at our Winebar do Castelo was not as positive as you expected. We would like to repply to your review and clarify a few points:
1. It is not our responsability that we are included in the list of restaurants in TripAdvisor. Our very first reviews were posted by clients, which was both a surprise and a joy to us. The name Winebar is quite clear and it never misleads anyone. There are Winebars all over the world and the concept is the same: to offer the best wines in the market at affordable prices, coupled with cheese, fine charcuterie and other traditional delicacies.
2. You make a negative remark about our wine list. We have more than 90 wines on our list and this included the best portuguese wines, awared in international competitions and reviewed in international specialized magazines. If this is not a good wine list, then, we don't know what is.
3. We don't understand why you prefered to write in English, being Portuguese, and you also mention you were the only Portuguese couple in the Winebar. That happens a lot because we are located in the entrance to the São Jorge Castle and this monument is mostly visited by Lisbon tourists. As you can see in our other reviews, more than 90% of our reviews are from international visitors and their feed-back has always been very good. We won the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellece twice, for that same reason.
4. We also noticed you wrote several reviews about other restaurants in Lisbon, most of them negative as well (we wonder if you own a competitor restaurant in Lisbon?). In your review to Belcanto, ranked #1 in TripAdvisor, you say the food was boring. That is quite a statement, considering their chef is one of the best cooks in Portugal, with an international career and a Michelin star, but, as they say, tastes cannot be argued.

Kind regards,
Nuno Santos

Found this cute wine bar after visiting the castle. I don't think it's a place that many locals go to, but it's got a great atmosphere, amazing wines, and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and fun. Highly recommend the mixed cheese and meat plate (the tomato jam was incredible). Loved it! You can read more about my experience here: http://wanderandwine.com/wandering-and-wine-ing-in-lisbon

It´s a wine bar that exceeds in service and food. It server wine by the glass.
Our waiter didn´t ask what kind of wine we would like to drink. He asked me to describe what I like in a wine, and he would bring us a glass. If the wine he would bring was not what I described, he would not charge the glass. Well the guy is a magician....
A very pleasent afternoon with several glasses of wine from all portugal and a superb food as companion. my impressions:
Location: almost on the castle foot, but away from main hotel areas.
Decor: small place and simple.
Wine Chart: Wines from all over portugal, included some very old Ports, ans some cognacs from 1890 (+-).
Food: small portions of a very sofisticated portuguese food, like a table of cheeses, included 3 types of Serra da Estrela. We have also boar and it was magnificent.
Service: above the media.

Overall a major wine and food experience.
