“A Great Find Near the Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2012

If you want to learn about Portuguese wines and ports, the Wine Bar do Castelo is the place to visit. The owner has a wealth of knowledge about wines, along with what should be served with each type. Be open to experimenting with the different wines and tastes. You'll learn a lot about wine and your personal tastes.

The staff is friendly and extremely attentive. They even helped us in locating a bag left at our hotel.

The Wine Bar do Castelo is not easy to find and seating is limited. If you have a reservation, you have their full attention. Without a reservation, you probably won't get in. It fills up every night for a reason. It was one of our favorite outings in Lisbon.

“A lovely bar coupled with superb knowledge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

Wow! I was so glad to visit this bar for a much-needed glass of white port before I crossed the street to eat at 100 Manieras Bistro. What a shame we don't have bars like it in the UK. The staggering range of Portuguese wines and ports was a joy to behold and I was even taken into the temperature controlled "cellar" where I gazed on a bottle of port costing nearly 500 euros! Definitely recommended. I am afraid I cannot comment on the food, as I didn't eat here.

“Superb wine bar for cheese, meats and portuguese wine!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

Just writing from our mini break in Lisbon. We discovered this wine bar on our way up to the castle. All we can say is that this was a superb find. Nuno the host/owner is a fine host with a thirst for knowledge and boy is he knowledgeable. He knows his wines brilliantly and helped us choose wines to suit our tastes and euqally to complement the fine cheese and meat plates on offer.

Small cheese plate 15 Euro. Wine we chose was 7/8 Euro per glass. All delicious and well sourced.

Really a fine bar to sit, relax, enjoy fine portuguese wine, cheese and meats in a relaxed and well informed environment well away form the crowds. Nuno is a well informed and welcoming host.

Definitely heading back the next time we visit the city.

“Nunu knows his wine, really knows his wine!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

The whole Tripadvisor thing is very powerful.

I read reviews of this place and it was to be our first stop as we arrived (staying at the castle) at 12.30 so it was bank and then straight to Wine Bar do Castelo.

We settled in at around 2.30pm (as it opened - at 2 they were still cleaning and we were turned away).

Nunu, the owner and resident wine expert, is passionate about his subject but with a sense of humour and not at all "snobby."

He asked how much we wanted to spend and we said 40 - 50 Euros and off we went on our adventure. After careful questioning about tastes etc Nunu arrives with fantastically clean, sparkling glasses and a couple of choices to try, not small amounts but a good amount for both to try. Some you like, some you don't, Nunu is not bothered, he will soon come up with a clean glass and new offering.

We enjoyed a small platter of bread, olives, cheese and meats. The goats cheese was simply amazing as was the smoked pork neck. 2 amazing whites were followed by 2 hearty reds. We then swooned over a 20 year old LBV and a simply awesome tawny port. The bill - exactly 50 Euros. So £40 for a good sized helping of bread, olives, cheese and amazing meats/sausage added to 4 glasses of wine (tastes of 4) and 2 astounding glasses of port - definite value and we will be returning at the earliest opportunity.

Thank you Nunu.
