This is a big red brick building. Me and my partner got free entry as we had purchased the Lisboa card. Its a really interesting and very large museum. Has many exhibits and things to get your hands on.

Interesting but it is really a look at the old coal powerplant that occupied this building in the past. I would not go out of my way to visit this museum; we were across the street, had the Lisboa card, so we just went in.

I went on Sunday when most museums in Lisboa are free (I'm pretty sure it was cheap general admission anyway). As a graduated civil engineer who has been travelling for 8 months straight through Europe, this was one of the coolest and most unique museums I have seen!

The location in grand Belem is nice, the building itself is impressive, but the restoration of the electricity generation plant on the inside is amazing. The presentation and information was scientifically thorough and clean (lots of English). Sometimes there was too much information, but at least you can pick and choose what you like. At the bottom there was a bit of general history on electricity as well as an interactive learning area for kids.

If you go to the Museu da Electricidade, I suggest you make a day trip to spend in all of the Belem neighbourhood, there is so much else to see here, and on a nice day, it's a great place to relax along the river!

While travelling we regularly point to the scientific/technical/engineering/architectural sites and definitely this was the best Scientific museum ever. The old power station by the river has been carefully restored. The original machinery and the entire system once used to produce electricity are now a path in which the whole power plant production is carefully explained (portoguese and english) , helped by well made videos, simulations and open machines and burn chambers to explore the inside. Children experiments space and a pleasant bar where you can have excellent tea and a break. Entry free on that day but they normally charge a few E. Take the chance to have walk along the river before heading back. Free entry. Not to be missed.
