“nice location, funky rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012

really nice place, good location, right in the heart of town and minutes walking away from a nice view point. funky rooms, nice design, but unfortunately rooms are quite small. especially bathrooms, you can not fit in 2 people there... no wifi in the rooms. well, they say there is one, but it doesnt work. so why would you even say yes we have wifi in the rooms. wifi is available only down at the lobby.breakfast is quite annoying, all you get is one simple pre-prepared plate with some cheese and a ham....but overall good value.

The location of this guesthouse is good, in the heart of Bairro Alto, on a narrow street.Taxidrivers do not know the name of the street or the hotel.Great chance to make the tour of Baixa and Bairro Alto and to spend a lot of money! It's a good idea to print a map using Google maps if you are for the first time in Lisbon.
The staff was polite, but unhelpfull. It was a stupid choice to stay in this guesthouse.I was not impressed seeing lots of black cats on the walls or green lamps in my room, nothing original in the design.
The room was very small and dark, no place for my things.Just two beds and a little table, nothing else.No chairs, no night lamp.I kept all my things in my big suitcase, except the laptop. The bathroom, without door, just a plastic curtain in front of the shower has enough space for a cat, but not for a tall woman.Of course, the shampoo was poor, cheap.I front of my window was the patio, terrible noisy when this place was populated.Free wi-fi, but who cares? No enough place to stay in this tiny room!
And the enormous price of this modest room was 46 euro for a night, without breakfast.
I cannot recommend this guesthouse, sorry.

Evidencia Light Sta. Catarina Hotel is a very nice place to stay a couple of nights. Location is good (near Bairro Alto), bed was very comfortable and free wi-fi was provided, but what impressed me the most was the decoration, specially the lively colors. The only con is that the rooms are a bit small, but for the price and considering the type of hotel (2*), it still is great value for money.

I stayed for 3 nigths and I liked this hotel so much. Maybe when you're looking at map location does not seem very central but in fact it does. It takes 10-15 min to get hotel from Placa do Commercioon on foot. Tram station is just around the corner. Also there is excellent lookout just from steps from the hotel.
Howerver it's not easy to find the hotel especially if it's your first visit to Lisbon - therefore I' advice to cath the taxi.
Room is minimally furnished but it's not a big deal. The only issue is the shower. It is really small and it's not comfortable to take a shower because of curtain. But I knew about it so it wasn't problem for me at all.
Stuff is extremely welcoming, polite and helpful. Nice design. Central location. Reasonable rates.

Firstly Lisbon is a hilly place. We had to lug our 15 kg luggage up steep slopes on cobbled stone pavements. It was about 500m slightly uphill from the nearest metro Baixa but the airport bus does not go there but to a metro station 1 stop away from this. We pulled our luggage uphill 900m to the hotel. Pls remember to print a google map showing the exact location of this hotel as it is on a small street hidden away from the main street.

The hotel has NO LIFT. So please be prepared to carry your heavy luggage upstairs if you want good rooms. The 4th floor is for hostel beds and a narrow spiral staircase leads up there from 3rd floor. There is no way you can carry a heavy suitcase up that spiral staircase so do pack light if you want to stay in this budget hotel.

What attracted us to book this place is the funky decoration. It's newly renovated and tastefully decorated. But we are surprised that other than 1 set of towels and 1 shampoo plus 1 conditioner that are provided, all else is pretty much chargeable. We were given bed sheets for which we had to put them on the beds ourselves. A double room means 2 single beds, and we had to park them together.

The room has no table other than a 0.5m ledge which we struggled to use it to place all our cutlery, cooker and watch, etc. No chairs except for a low small sofa by the window (not sure if sofa is present in all rooms though). There are only 2 hangers in the room and the hotel has no extra hangers to spare. Oh yes, there is no TV in the room. You can go down to the lounge to watch the TV shared by all in the lounge.

The toilet is tiny. Only a quarter size shower with curtain is provided. Once you close the curtain, there is only room to turn from left to right. Even the toilet has no door, only a curtain hides the entrance. So after a shower, the floor is all wet and slippery. The basin is tiny with little space for putting your toiletries, let alone wash vegetables or cutlery. We had to use the shower head to wash our veggies on the floor.

We did our laundry (small items like socks) but had no place to hang them to dry. And the hair dryer cost 1.50 euro per day to rent.

Hair dryer, additional towels, additional soap, PC terminal etc are all chargeable.

The lounge downstairs provides free wi-fi (only if you have your own laptop). It's a cosy place and yes, drinks and coffee are chargeable. There are shops and a small supermarket near the hotel.

If we knew this place is so "basic", we would have paid more for a better room (and not have to worry about having to pay extras for a hand towel (there are only 2 bath towels in the room) or more toilet paper!) and we have to make our bed ourselves. So if you can afford it, pay more for a better place albeit this is a nicely renovated tiny hostel. But if you are on budget, just remember to pack light (carry luggage upstairs and lug luggage uphill), bring extra towels and soap, travel hair dryer and your own hangers.

simple, clean, friendly and central. There was some noise from the street (midnight rubbish collection, people) - but there's a fan in the room so you can close the windows completely. The ensuite shower room was a little dark in storm cloud grey - but everything was clean and new. Would definitely stay there again!
