We booked an Inside Lisbon walking tour to do on our first day in Lisbon. It was our first time to do such a tour. We met Paulo who has a lot of interesting facts about Lisbon. We were very impressed with the tour - a highlight of our stay . In fact we booked a second tour with the same company to do the gourmet tour. We have 3 teenage boys who also agree it was a highlight of their stay. Recommend for anyone who wants to get a local's perspective on this great city. And the food tastings are yummy!

On our last day in Lisbon we took Inside Lisbon's Fatima/Nazare/Obidos Day Trip. The tour was very enjoyable, hassle-free, with a couple of extra stops along the way, and the perfect amount of time spent at each attraction. Left from, and returned to, the Hard Rock Cafe, which is very easy to find. While driving to each attraction the tour guide/driver will explain the highlights of each attraction. And once there you go off on your own.
Prior to this Day Trip, on another day of our stay in Lisbon, we decided to go to Sintra on our own. We wanted to see the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, and the Quinta da Regaleira. We left our hotel at 9 AM and walked to the train station (a 5 minute walk). Trains from Lisbon to Sintra were supposed to be running every 15 to 20 minutes. However, due to train striking there was a disruption in services for the trains on the Lisbon/Sintra line. We waited 75 minutes for the Lisbon to Sintra train and by the time it arrived in Lisbon there were HUNDREDS of people waiting for it. And of course once we arrived in Sintra HUNDREDS of people descended on the few buses doing the Moorish Castle/Pena Palace route. To make a long story short all we ended up seeing was the Pena Palace and the town of Sintra. It was not until 12 noon that we were at the Pena Palace. This accounted for waiting for the train, the train ride, waiting for and taking the bus up to the Pena Palace ticket "office", waiting for and taking the Pena Palace trolley. And the cost of doing it ourselves cost us almost 60 euros (train tickets for 2 was 10 euros, bus tickets for 2 was 10 euros, trolley tickets for 2 was 5 euros, palace tickets for 2 was 32 euros). AND, in regards to the bus that does the Sintra to Moorish Castle/Pena Palace route, and back to Sintra, as you come back into Sintra you have one of 2 options to depart the bus. To get off in the center of Sintra, or to ride it back to the train station. We opted to get off in the center of Sintra, but this meant that we had to walk from the center back to the train station. Easy walk, but takes 20 minutes and there we waited another 40 minutes for the train to take us from Sintra back to Lisbon.
As you can see we wasted so much valuable time. And the cost of doing it ourselves wasn't that much less than going on a tour. We didn't see 1/2 of what we would have seen had we gone on a tour. So after experiencing doing Sintra on our own, and having taken Inside Lisbon's Fatima/Nazare/Obidos Day Trip, we REALLY WISHED WE HAD taken Inside Lisbon's Sintra/Cascais Day Trip!

best money I spent. Excellent walking tour in small group, walked 3,5 hours, visiting Baixa - Chiado - Alfama. Also took the tram 12. Great introduction, little facts, visiting churches, shops and delicatessen stores on and off the beaten track. Thank you so much for this enthousiastic guidance! Very good for solo travellers, but advisable for any type of traveller.

Our walking tour of Lisbon was very informative and well laid out. Margarida is well versed in the culture and history of the city and she imparts her knowledge in a meter and format that's easy to digest. Our tour lasted more than four hours and was a very good introduction to Lisbon. Margarida is an excellent guide to Lisbon's long and varied past and I highly recommend her to anyone interested in the walking tour.
