We toured with Liliana from Lisbon Explorer and had an excellent tour. This was a private tour arranged beforehand by one of our fellow cruisers who had really done her homework and, lucky for us, selected the best tour company in Lisbon. Very prompt pickup at the port in a very comfortable and roomy van, and then we were off to Sintra and Pena Palace, a UNESCO world heritage site. Liliana was extremely knowledgeable and relayed interesting facts and lots of history on our trip up to the beautiful palace. I must also comment on the very safe driver assigned to us. You would have to be very good to maneuver on some of those narrow mountain roads. Once there, she gave us our own private tour, with no waiting in line, which far exceeded just wandering around on your own. On the way back to the port, we stopped at Quinta da Regaleira where, once again, we had our private tour revealing interesting facts and history of the estate and surrounding area. Liliana kept the drive to and from the port interesting all along the way. Kudos to both her and our driver, which I am sorry to say, I don't remember his name.

We had a few days in Lisbon during a Vantage tour of Portugal. Instead of taking bus tours with the large group we opted on having a local guide give us a personal walking tour. We were met on time by Justin and he was so good at providing us the sights and history of Lisbon we asked to do it a second time the next day. He and his company also gave us good advice on which Fado to have dinner with and enjoyed that experience as well. We highly recommend Lisbon Explorer. Justin had perfect English and was a scholar on church history. The first day we did the Hidden Lisbon tour then the next day we did the Around Alfama tour. Justin gave us fascinating accounts of Portuguese history for the past 500 - 600 years: sad strife
between the large Lisbon Jewish community and the Roman Catholics; failings of the Portuguese monarchy; wasted opportunities and greed; how Lisbon was a bustling center of espionage during WWII; the great wealth of Portugal during the 1400 - 1600 period; and a period of stagnation and poverty from 1820 - 2005. He suggested that the European Community may have been enough of a stimulus in 2005 to finally get Portugal back on its feet. He described the Portuguese people as having a belief that they have a manifest destiny of great importance and to this day live beyond their means and are not at all practical with their own resources. He described the relationship with Spain as being one of mutual dislike but tolerance for one another. The Portuguese, he conveyed, are much more akin to the Italians than the Spanish, both culturally and genetically. After the tour, our guide recommended a place to rest over a drink then a place well known for their grilled octopus which turned out to be a delicious! His final recommendation was a place called "Mr. Wine" for deserts and an evening of Fado, the Portuguese version of the blues. The music was wonderful.

From my first contact with Lisbon Explorer everything was amazing. My initial planning emails were answered promptly. Booking was easy. I was effortlessly able to change the tour date after the cruise line altered our itinerary.
The guide and driver were waiting for us at the cruise port as scheduled. We had a pleasant drive, in a comfortable van, to Sintra and an depth tour of the architectural wonders. Our guide (I'm sorry I forgot her name) spoke fluent English and was provided a knowledgeable and insightful commentary on the sites.
I highly recommend and will be using London Explorer again in October.

We recently took a wonderful private walking tour of Lisbon that showed us the quieter, more quirky aspects of the city. Paulo was an excellent guide, oozing with information and great stories to intrigue us. The four of us were away from the tourist traffic, wandering the maze of narrow streets, seeing historic and beautiful places, while listening to Poalo's descriptions of life in Lisbon, both past and present.
