We left this tour for the last day of our stay in Lisbon as we wanted in depth information on Alfama and it's history. We were not disappointed! Enjoyed how our guide Paulo was able to make history so interesting and left us with some facts we were never have thought about. We signed up for a group walk but because it was low season it was just the two of us. We covered much more and appreciated that he willing to go the extra mile.

Our experience with Lisbon was fantastic in every sense. From the very beginning, I was really pleased with how attentive and prompt Antonio (the manager) was in all our email exchanges. He took the effort to give us some general advice on travelling in Lisbon, precautions to take in the area we were staying, and detailed directions to our meeting point with Paulo. Kudos to Antonio for such great customer service.

When we were on our private tour with Paolo, it felt like we were brought on a tour by a long-time penpal, as he took the effort to understand our interests and point out the sights and places (including restaurants) which would interest us. Paolo is also such a great story-teller that we could also visualise the history of lisbon and the various places we visited play out right before our eyes.

We also had a great time with Rita on our Secret Sintra tour. What a charming place Sintra is! We really appreciated the trip to the Monteiro Carvalho mansion with Rita and her amazing recommendation to the restaurant G-spot :)

I was initially skeptical about spending so much on private tours but I am so glad we did. Thanks for Lisbon Explorer for helping us discover and fall in love with Lisbon.

I highly recommend taking a tour with Lisbon Explorers. It was very easy to book. The meeting spot was easy to find (even with jet lag...had just arrived from North America). And the guide, Paolo, was interesting, informative, entertaining and so very helpful. It was the best thing to do at the beginning of the vacation as he gave us so many helpful hints and tips about travelling in Portugal, as well as the best history lesson!!! Loved it!!

Paolo Scheffer, our Art Historian who accompanied us on the walking tour, was undoubtedly the master history story teller. Animated, humorous and deep not just in languages, but history of Europe and especially on Portugal. I didn't know how shallow I was and how little I knew about Portugal till I joined this tour, and absolutely loved it. Not all stories were pleasant, but Paolo possessed the gift to make one empathized with what the Portuguese and other inhabitants had to go through, good times and bad. I am in love with Portugal now and will definitely return for more. Thanks Paolo and Lisbon Explorer for making our trip to Lisboa an unforgettable experience.

We're a big group -- a family of nine that travels together, with ages ranging from 17 to 84 years old. We were drawn to Lisbon Explorer tours because of their website (and their promise that most of their walking tours are structured so that you walk downhill most of the time!). What sealed the deal was their excellent customer support and communication with us prior to our visit.

We've worked with local guides all over the world, but Antonio of Lisbon Explorer is the only one who, prior to our visit, gave us detailed and useful information that really enhanced our stay. Airport transfers? He not only made suggestions ... he offered to call to make the arrangements if we had trouble doing so via email. Weather? He sent us weather updates prior to our visit, prompting us to leave our heavy coats behind and pack for sunnier, warmer weather than we'd expected.

And then, of course, there are the guides themselves. We worked with two: Paolo and Liliana. Paolo *knows* Lisbon -- its history, its culture, its best restaurants, its brightest moments, its darkest secrets. But -- and this is critical -- most of all, he knows how to bring all of that to life. Could we have stumbled on certain sites ourselves? Yes -- but Paolo gives these tours a level of context and depth that you'd never achieve on your own. He absolutely charmed every member of our group.

Liliana distinguished herself with her knowledge, yes -- but particularly with her patience. We're a big group, and guiding us is a bit like herding cats, since some (like my father) walk slowly, while others (like the boys) run far ahead. And when we fell in love with the Quinta da Regaleira, she allowed us to wander around all we liked, even though we really spent more time there than anyone had planned. You don't get that kind of flexibility on huge group tours, and we were very happy with her ability to change plans on the fly.

One note: we loved -- LOVED! -- the "Wine Under the Castello" tour, which can be combined as a lunch with the "Around Alfama" tour. Paolo tells me this is one of the least-taken tours Lisbon Explorer offers ... but we are very happy we took it. (In fact, this was one of the high points of our trip!) This tour serves up huge, gracious portions of local cheeses, cured meats, olives, olive oils, and fine wines. In addition to savoring them, you learn about the products, where they come from, and what makes them unique. There is zero pressure to buy -- you're free to just enjoy the meal.

We couldn't even bear to think of dinner afterward. (We did manage to gobble up a few pastries from the bakery next to our apartment, though!)

If you're going to Lisbon, sign up for tours from Lisbon Explorer. These aren't your grandpa's dusty old tours -- they are personal, vital, and alive. After working with Paolo and/or Liliana for a day, you'll be confident enough to traverse the city on your own ... and knowledgeable enough to appreciate what you'll find.
