The staff really work on passers by to choose this restaurant on the main tourist eating drag in Lisbon however, the charm evaporates once you're seated and committed.
The food and wine is poor and half-hearted with broken bread roll as soup croutons but I won't bother to detail further because food is incidental to this "restaurant's" trade. The hard sell, hustle and overcharging generates the profit here and you buy a sense of unease and resentment.
During the starter and main course, waiters thrall through the tables with the same tray of sad looking dessert puddings trying to hock them. Some tables were hassled multiple times like this. I told the waiter they looked terrible.
We decided to cut our losses while we were behind and asked for the bill before dessert. This is where the waiters really came into their own, working in pairs like a wrestling tag team. One waiter went through the bill item by item ticking each thing emphatically which seemed odd at the time. We corrected him saying we did not have all the starters he listed. He said ok, the bill total was 52 euro and a normal tip would bring it to 58 euro. He wrote 58 on the paper table cover and circled it as if to make it clear to us what he meant. We handed him 60 and a new waitress came back with 2 euro. We asked where the rest of our change was and she asked were we not giving 58, pointing at the circled 58 on the table cover which she hadn't seen before as she was new to our table but obliviously knew it would be there.
Needless to say we insisted on our 8 euro change but only afterwards realised were still overcharged for all starters in the fuss.
During our meal an adjacent table had problems with being overcharged and the waiter and waitress pretended not to understand.
We continued to eat along Rua Porta San Antonio following this because though a tourist strip the restaurants are really decent, especially for fish. Dined at Ciao Milano restaurant twice finding the staff and cuisine genuine.
Restaurant Torremolinos does the fine restaurants and the area a disservice and they will all loose out if this rotten apple continues to fester.
Is there not a restaurant organisation or standards authority in Lisbon which would address this outlet trading in dishonesty while posing as a restaurant.
