“Welcoming Restaurant, Delightful Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013

The concierge at our hotel (the Tiara Park Atlantic Lisboa) recommended this restaurant in the Barrio Alto for a special dinner with colleagues. It was a perfect recommendation.

We were a bit concerned at first by the entryway (which is lit with magenta neon and displays fish) but we needn’t have worried. The decor, architecture, and atmosphere of the restaurant was restful and interesting. The walls look like the original stone whitewashed over except for the arches.

We were there very early (by European standards) but the waiter was extremely welcoming, and very interested in making sure we understood everything and had a satisfying experience. We started with the bread, cheese, and olives (this comes out as if it is complimentary, but it’s not. You don’t have to eat it, but if you do, you do have to pay for it. However, it’s worth it. The cheese was gone in almost no time at all.)

The waiter was helpful in making menu recommendations, and the food and wine was excellent. A wide range of traditional Portuguese dishes, and some more familiar ones, and a reasonable range of vegetarian and non-seafood options.

Throughout, the waitstaff was friendly, helpful, and eager to please. An excellent restaurant experience, which I would not hesitate to recommend. My husband liked it so much, he was all for coming back for dinner the next day!

“Excellent local food and wine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

I am so happy we reserved in advance. The evening was just what we wanted. Even though we were jet lagged and wobbly, we thoroughly enjoyed our wonderful meal. We chose to share several appetizers, one main course, and dessert, and asked our waiter to choose a wine with each course. He did an excellent job, and we tatsted not only local wines, but wines not generally exported- a real treat. It was totally delicious- and totally fun! We were surrounded by locals and a variety of tourists of many languages.
Note: we walked there from our hotel. From the main avenue, you turn toward the Bairro Alto and an amazing uphill climb, daunting to a billy goat. No problem! Take the little tram uphill (your fare gives you a round trip!). Then follow your google map, if you made one. Skip the taxi and walk back, taking the tram back down the hill. The neighborhood is well lit and alive with energy. (Disney would be jealous.) Then you can walk or take a cab if need be.

“Not a good value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

This restaurant has the trappings of a fine restaurant, which builds expectations for a spectacular meal. However, I was disappointed. The food was good but not excellent, and frankly it is even hard for me to remember what I had because it was so pedestrian. Moreover, the waiters were haughty. Maybe it was because they were tired of dealing with the tourists, who comprised most of the diners. Finally, it was very expensive compared to other better restaurants where we dined in Portugal. Go there if you want to be in a beautiful space but not if you want a good value meal.
