This little restaurant (8 tables only) has a great charme : you just feel home in it, and the cuisine is really delicious. I had there my first grilled sardines. Not only it was very good, but you also have more than enough. The owner is very friendly, speaks several languages (at least french, english and spanish). You have to be very careful in the street if you want to find the restaurant, because it's very discrete. And you don't have loud music all the time (which I find very good because I like to eat in quiet places). Nobody can regret to come there. I highly recommand it !

We visited this restaurant on the back of TripAdviser reviews. Once you find the restaurant, you won't be disaaponted. The owner is lovely, the food was delicious and the wine scrummy (the house wine was EU7.70!!!). We had a wonderful afternoon and a meal to remember. Highly recommended.

Located in Alfama opposite a very traditional Fado restaurant, the small restaurant Malmequer Bemmequer offers a personal and traditional service for value for money.
The waiter, possibly the owner, welcomes you and arranges everything in this small place. Every table is clean and he is responsible for all guests.

If you order a juice, you will get it freshly made!
There is a good choice of meat and fish. We ordered a couvert (starter) with bread, butter, olives, ham and cheese. That was very nice, although some pieces of bread were not that fresh anymore and a bit hard. We had a bream and brasse for the main, coming with potatoes and vegetables: Very fresh, healthy and just to enjoy. When you look on the plate you could think: 'Is that from your own mother's kitchen?' Very good!
For dessert you get a nice display on the table which you can turn for Portugese or English language. That feels so special, as the display looks so modern in the restaurant with stuccoed ceiling, old looking menus and a wine menu that is written by hand with a pencil.
We had Pineapple in Port wine - very good again!
There is only one toilet in the restaurant - so everyone is responsible!

We can only recommend that place with its lovely service by the owners to very good prices. Respect the waiters, as they give you honest service. They are very good representers of Lisbon's restaurant culture. We would come again.

Party of 5. Ordered 2 bottles wine, water, covers and mains. 15 wait for initial service - ok. Orders taken. half hour later advised two mains not available, 2nd choice not available either. After 1hr 10 mins, 2 dishes of the 5 served, one had to be returned - plate and food quite cold - clearly not cooked to order. The person with the steak mignon had to start as that was getting cold too. the re-heated dish returned, then a third main arrived some time later. The filet mignon diner was finished and the two other diners almost finished by the time the two remaining mains were served. Our two bottles of wine and water all gone by this time. the cod in cream dish (the 3rd choice) was akin to a dish made from leftovers..the filet mignon was ok as was the fish kebab, the mixed grill was like thin strips of leather and tasted accordingly. No apology whatsoever for the inordinate delay or sub standard quality of the food. Very poor value but thankfully our only negative experience during our stay in Lisbon. Small restaurant with tables crammed in. Waiter (owner?) pleasant but needs assistance and certainly the chef/kitchen needs re-evualation.

A small, cosy and intimate restaurant that gives friendly service and fantastic food at a price that won't break the bank. It opens at 7-ish and it is worth getting there early to ensure you get a table- as there are only about eight! The owner is very friendly and will advise on food and wine choices. We asked him to recommend a wine and he recommended one at €9 - which was one of the cheapest on the menu. It was wonderful - and tasted like a far more expensive wine. It was so nice not to be 'ripped' off! The food was excellent, fresh, delicious and nicely presented - can definitely recommend the fish kebabs.
Although the restaurant filled up quickly and people were continually coming in to ask for a table, we did not feel rushed to leave. It was definitely our best and most memorable meal during our trip to Lisbon. The only drawback is that it does not open on Mondays.
