“Good food but small portions”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

Very nice owner serves good fish but in small portions. I had sardines many times in Portugal and Spain but it was the only time, when for about 10 Euro (with boiled potatoes and side-salad) i got only 4 average-size sardines! However sardines and grilled mackerel were well grilled and tasty.

“Vegetarian Take on Traditional Cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2014

Finding a vegetarian friendly restaurant in Alfama proved to be difficult until we found Mestre Andre. The Mestre was inviting and engaging and the vegetarian section, including several traditional Portuguese meals done vegetarian, led us to return later in our trip. The food was excellent both times, the vinho verde on tap was delicious, and the recommendations by Mestre Andre were spot on. The restaurant has our strongest recommendation!

“Lovely tasting menu for lunch at this friendly restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2014

This small restaurant was recommended to us by our apartment manager. It wasn't easy to find as you need to walk through another restaurants seating area to reach it. The small shaded patio is above the street. The six of us were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed a feast from the tasting menu, including a wonderful fish soup, octopus salad, chickpeas, lamb chops, washed down with copious amounts of white sangria and wine. All for a very reasonable price.

“A different Alfama experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

While the hosts in many of the small Alfama diners don't speak anything but Portuguese and will serve you in humble manners, old Mestre Andre will hover around his tables, speaking the Queen's English and almost come across a bit pompous. Some tourists make their way to his tables while the neighboring restaurant remains mostly empty, probably not helped by its hostess on guard like a bulldog outside while she's looking up to Mestre Andre wondering what he does differently. The food is good. He also serves paella, like it's done in some other suburbs but not so much in Alfama. At our visit he unfortunately let himself down greatly by serving a stale and mouldy cheesecake. When he realised he quickly whipped them away, saying they weren't right but without apology. (He did not charge for it.) It would seem a bit cruel to knock off more than one star because of that so I'll give him three, as the main courses were satisfying.

“A very enjoyable experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2014

We had dinner a few evenings ago followed by lunch the next day and this is the best testament as to the quality of the food and the friendliness of the people. As for food, we particularly liked the cataplana (stew) dishes and we tried a variety of them. The people side owes largely to a polyglot gentleman who attends at the table with the serene curtesy of someone who has lived an interesting life of which you would want to know more.
