After a few nights in Portugal and some spectacular food in fantastic atmospheres we wanted to check out the neighborhood of Bairro Alto in Lisbon. We're still ashamed of ourselves to have been tricked into such an awful tourist trap and not spotting it immediately as we walked in.
The waiter was seemingly friendly and immediately put some bread, olives and brie on the table. We ordered a bottle of wine, some prawns for a starter and a couple of dishes from today's specials.
The wine was bland and totally overpriced. The prawns had clearly been frozen and tasted as if they had been thawed days ago. Compared to the main course, they were, however, a culinary wonder. The main courses tasted horribly and were simply inedible.
Looking around we realized that other people around us had the same reaction. People were sitting there with almost full plates and looking around with a mix of confusion and disgust.
When we asked for the bill, we were to our surprise not only charged for the "food" we had ordered, also charged a hefty fee for the bread, olives and brie that was put on the table without we having asked for it. In some ironic sense, it made the visit complete and consistent -- there is absolutely nothing nice to be said about O Barrigas.
