“Tourist trap, inedible food”
Reviewed July 16, 2011

After a few nights in Portugal and some spectacular food in fantastic atmospheres we wanted to check out the neighborhood of Bairro Alto in Lisbon. We're still ashamed of ourselves to have been tricked into such an awful tourist trap and not spotting it immediately as we walked in.

The waiter was seemingly friendly and immediately put some bread, olives and brie on the table. We ordered a bottle of wine, some prawns for a starter and a couple of dishes from today's specials.

The wine was bland and totally overpriced. The prawns had clearly been frozen and tasted as if they had been thawed days ago. Compared to the main course, they were, however, a culinary wonder. The main courses tasted horribly and were simply inedible.

Looking around we realized that other people around us had the same reaction. People were sitting there with almost full plates and looking around with a mix of confusion and disgust.

When we asked for the bill, we were to our surprise not only charged for the "food" we had ordered, also charged a hefty fee for the bread, olives and brie that was put on the table without we having asked for it. In some ironic sense, it made the visit complete and consistent -- there is absolutely nothing nice to be said about O Barrigas.

“A real find in the Barrio Alto”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

My first night in Lisbon I went out wandering in Barrio Alto. I was overwhelmed by the choices, and it was hard to distinguish the touristy from the local. I stumbled into an upscale looking restaurant, and the waiter was kind enough to direct me around the corner to O Barrigas. It smelled great from the outside, was cozy and inviting, and the food was delicious. I had the "Spiritual Cod" :-) Always ask for some Piri Piri sauce - it adds a kick to any dish. I felt warmed, heart, body and tummy!!!

“Nice local joint, but food was just ok”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

Great atmosphere, you can tell a lot of locals eat here and it's not too touristy. Service was great, but the food was just ok, not that great. Kind of bland and no real surprises about the food. The bacalau was bland, the seafood special was plain with little flavor. The soup lacked flavor, the shrimp appetizer was good though. We were a little surprised when we got the bill though, we didn't know we would get charged for all the little extras they brought us (we didnt ask for them), like a tiny plate of olives. It all added up to an unexpected 10 euro added to the bill. But otherwise, it's a charming little place with so so food.

“Just Cute, Nothing More!”
Reviewed November 13, 2009

The restaurant attracts a lot of pedestrians that pass by the streets. It’s definitely a cute and cozy place, but the food is a total disappointment. The meat with mushrooms was served cold and the sauce completely fluid, with fat floating on its surface. The Jewish rice was more a soup than anything else. The rice was served almost cold as well. Although the atmosphere was very nice and the service quite polite and friendly, I wouldn’t indicate this restaurant.
