Fatima is the best well-known Marian shrine in Portugal. According to the Church version, Our Lady appeared on a tree on the 13th of each month, between May and October (except in August), in 1917. The small chapel was built after the apparitions and where the statue of Our Lady stands it was the place of the small tree (which meanwhile disappeared). All believers going to Fatima, go to the chapel for praying, and due to that reason it is a place to observe the different expressions of peoples’ religiosity. Enjoy!

This was the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three children in 1917, with her current statue said to be standing on the exact spot where her image appeared and spoke to the children. People have been praying here continuously every day for over 100 years since the apparitions. It was very humble for me to see people from all over the world, ages, races and backgrounds, all sitting in prayer together, some kneeling on the hard floor in devotion. Make sure you attend the 9.30pm rosary held with lighted candles, and take part in the procession afterwards. It is a touching devotional experience. You can pick up the candles in the open area near the chapel where you can leave your donation for them.

Simple smaller glass enclosed chapel with pews and kneeler, statute of Our Lady of Fatima, the children. Silent Space for worship, prayer, to light a candle or reflection. Open 24 hours.

This lovely chapel is special in many ways because of its proximity to the tree where Mary appeared to the children. But it is also special to attend the mass with other pilgrims from so many other countries

The most memorable place in the Sanctuary! We attended the 9.30 pm Prayers here and felt spiritually uplifted. And the Candlelight Procession, starting at about 10.10 pm, was the perfect end to a wonderful hour of worship.
