Owner description: This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.

“Serene and beautiful”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

Day trip to Fatima - one and a half hours out of Lisbon central. Fatima is absolutely beautiful and serene. Very quiet place to sit and reflect. A very holy place to just sit and watch. The new Basilica built is very modern compared to the rest of shrine. When you arrive you purchase candles, light them and place your request for something personal, healing for yourself or others. You can walk around the area but can get quite hot with all the concrete. Our driver insisted that we stop at a wholesale outlet for all our Fatima souvenirs, which need to be blessed. These can be bought in Fatima, but are dearer.

“Such a peaceful place indeed.”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

Very large and impressive, really a glance this beautiful basilica.
It was built in honor of Our Lady of Fatima in an area slightly outside the city center but easily accessible.
The surrounding area in my opinion is a bit 'too commercial, in fact there are so many stalls selling religious objects and souvenirs.
This is a sacred place, I think even one of the holiest of all Europe on a daily basis, thousands of pilgrims flock to this church and its huge courtyard as well.
About this basilica is a great architectural work from anywhere outside you can enjoy its beauty and its whiteness being the predominantly white colors all around.
Traveling from Porto to Lisbon, almost halfway I felt to go in this wonderful place to see with my own eyes this magnificent building.

“If you come as a " Vistor " respect the pilgrims”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

We visited whilst in the area to see what it was all about , & you have to remind yourself as this place is so BIG & commercial , that a lot of the vistors are piligrims & wish to pray & reflect . The giant neo classical Basilicia is @ the top of a 37 acre saucer shaped esplande , not a lot architectural interest , it just so big , we left with mixed feelings , but pleased we made the effort , but will not return

“Touching”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

A holly place filled with hope, peace and prayers. We lit a candle for our wishes and promises. We got to pray in the final minutes of an ongoing mass at the chapel, where the virgen had appeared. In the church we can find the tombs of all three sheperds, most recently, Sister Lúcia's one.I am sure this is a place I will return, soon!

“Designed for contemplation”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

The Basilica is one of the best parts of an enormous complex that is too modern in parts. The Basilica is moderate in size with beautiful stained glass and simple and moving shrines for the 3 children of Fatima. The nightly rosary with candlelight procession held at the nearby Chapel of the Apparitions was simply lovely.
