Owner description: This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.

“If you're not a believer you may be a bit bored”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

My husband and I went to Fatima and we're not religious. Seeing the sight and the people driven to it was definitely interesting. The churches are beautiful and seeing so many people looking so touched and inspired was nice. But if you're not there for worship, you will run out of things to look at in about an hour. The small shopping area surrounding the site mainly sells tacky religious goods and there are no good restaurants.

“hhmmmm”

Even though I was baptized there when I was just a few months old, I visited the city one time more in my teens, since my aunt made a promess to take me there if i recovered from a terrible car accident.

This is a place for people of faith and some fanaticism. You'll see people crawling on their bleeding knees and things like that.

It's also a big money making machine. If something happened in the in the past, it definitely lost it's purity.

“Serene and Majestic”
Reviewed November 29, 2012

Travelling in November means much lessor crowd. Hence more peaceful and prayerful. Though the Church itself is not big as one would expect, but with all the other buildings it makes a quite a awesome sight. The daily night Rosary and the candle light procession is a must for every pilgrim and truly memorable. Since it was November the nights are very cold.

“Place of Worship”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

We spent a day here in Fatima . We were fortunate to have a taxi driver who served as our tour guide . We were brought to the sites were the children first saw the apparition , the history , and the house were they used to live . What's touching was the very stone where the children saw the angel standing , being kept as it is , on the very site where the angel was supposed to have stood. We spent the afternoon at the Basilica to hear mass . The church of the Apparition ( supposed to be the third time the Blessed Virgin appeared and the miracle of the dancing sun happened ) is just several meters from the Basilica .
