“A gem in the Sintra Hills”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

There are many things that make Colina Flora a glorious place to stay. The outstanding accommodation and its grounds, for instance, which have been furnished with an eye for beauty and detail, and with care for the environment. The superb location - within walking distance of several authentically picturesque villages where 'just hanging out' comes naturally; and with Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais and some stunning beaches within easy travel distance. It's a paradise for walkers, and for many of the delightful local walks you don't even have to get into the car. On Saturdays and Sundays there is a wonderful fresh produce market nearby, and the nearest village has an excellent shop, with lots of fresh fruit and veg as well as organic products. Colina Flora has a glowing well-equiped kitchen for its guests, and good restaurants abound in the area. There is very little to wish for, and a lot to enjoy.

What makes Colina Flora particularly special, however, is the warm and generous hospitality of its owners, James and Aasta, who will (both literally and figuratively) go out of their way to make sure their guests have what they need. As stated in other reviews, breakfast is a feast. James will provide maps and detailed directions, walk along for a while if that might help, pick you up if you are stuck without a car. I dried a handwashed T-shirt on a chair outside; a bit later Aasta had quietly provided a drying rack. We never felt imposed upon, but we did feel genuinely looked after.

We were at Colina Flora for four days at the beginning of July, and the place was 'full' – but only in the sense that its small number of rooms were all occupied. It felt very quiet and peaceful, and offered us everything we'd hoped for.

One small piece of advice: when we were there the weather in the Sintra hills was considerably cooler than in the Algarve or even nearby Lisbon, particularly in the evenings. So bring something warm to wear when the sun goes down.

Room Tip: We stayed in 'Rose', which was lovely and spacious.

We had a very relaxing vacation at the Colina Flora. We thoroughly enjoyed the thoughtful touches such as fruit and tea service in the room and bottled water each day. The breakfast each morning was absolutely delicious and the prepared with care. James is a wealth of knowledge and is happy to provide advice about area attractions tailored to your needs and interests. All of his suggestions were right on for us! We stayed in the Camellia room, which was very clean and spacious with a gorgeous view.
Our only regret is that we did not have more time in Sintra to see everything. We were there four days but could have easily stayed a week.

Room Tip: Since the Camellia room is above two other rooms, it is probably the quietest.

We enjoyed a week long stay at Colina Flora where James and Aasta provided every support to ensure that we (and the other guests) got the most of our time in this beautiful part of the world. The accommodation was wonderful, comfortable, spacious and immaculate. The extra touches such as complimentary bottled water and lovely biscuits and cakes were much appreciated. Each morning James helped us plan our day by providing maps with walking trails mapped out by himself and giving great advice on where to eat on route! No request was too much trouble for James and Aasta and their interest in each guest getting the most out of their holiday was remarkable. The area is a walkers paradise and as long as you are reasonably fit (there are a lot of hills!) there is no need to hire a car. There is also a really good local bus service. We would definitely recommend Colina Flora to anyone who enjoys nature, fresh air and is in need of a relaxing holiday !

Simply perfect for us! We stayed in the Rose room which is spacious and private and has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The location Pe da Serra suited us perfectly as we were able to do some biking, walking and, got around very well on the bus for the rest of the time. Aasta and James are wonderful hosts whose sole aim is to ensure your holiday starts from the minute you arrive. Their ready assistance ensured we optimised the time and we cannot thank them enough.

Our first visit to Sintra municipality dates back on January 2012, and for in our opinion this is one of the most beautiful natural and cultural landscape in whole Europe we decided to come back and stay couple of night at this romantic and beautiful Quinta.
Located on the top of a hill overlooking Almoçageme (where one of the top 20 European beaches is located) the Colina Flora is the perfect place where you can relax after a long day around Sintra and its sorroundings which are all kinda close.
Aasta and James are probably my favourite hosts ever, and I really loved all James' advices, and Aasta's bio breakfast (awesome muesli!!!!!).
In the meantime they also improved the Lily rooms facilities while putting a sliding door (instead of a curtain) to separate the bedroom from the bathroom.
Highly recommended if you plan to stay one ore more days in the spectacular Sierra de Sintra.

We stayed at Quinta Colina Flora for 4-nights in June. We exchanged emails and a phone call with Aasta in advance of our stay and were greeted by James on our arrival who showed us around and to our room. For the first night we stayed in Lilly Room and then for the remaining 3-nights we were in Marigold Room.

I have to say that all 4-rooms are lovely and individual in their own way. Lilly Room had fantastic views over the valley to the sea and although the website explains that Lilly is the smallest room, we were pleasantly surprised at the size and like all the rooms it is very well equipped with dressing gowns, bottles of water replaced each day, fresh fruit and a bottle of wine on arrival. It has its own seating area outside overlooking the well tended garden. The bed was very comfortable and we both had a good nights sleep. All the rooms in the main house have WiFi available and we found this to be really fast with a consistent signal. If the views are not quite enough, the TV has many channels in many languages including BBC and ITV British channels.

For our remaining nights we stayed in Marigold Room, much bigger and with the same views towards the sea. The bathroom was nice with the same great vistas and was separated from the bedroom by the hallway and two sets of curtains. This room also has a large veranda overlooking the garden and I spent enjoyable times here, downloading my photographs onto my computer with Lukka (Lucca?) the dog sat at my feet (looking wistfully at the biscuit jar!).

Previous reviewers have already mentioned Aasta’s breakfasts but I must do the same - this includes a buffet of fresh fruit, yoghurts, cakes and bread which Aasta or James have bought fresh each day from the local village. We enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice and either fresh coffee or a choice of teas. Breakfast is relaxed and it was nice to have the option of sitting outside in the sun, inside or even taking a tray to our balcony. We also decided to ask Aasta and James to cook for us one evening. The food was superb - we chose the fish option and it was really nice to chat to other guests about our day and other travels whilst James was the wine waiter!

James really helped us get the most out of our 3-day stay suggesting different routes around the area, cafes and restaurants and even kindly walked all the way down to a local restaurant to show us the way, accompanied by Lukka - and Lukka’s friend Raffles from next door. His suggestions enabled us to see far more than we would have done otherwise in Sintra and I strongly suggest you visit ‘Saudade Vida & Arte Amor’ - an atmospheric cafe with a spread of traditional cakes. These were very well priced for a light lunch or reviving coffee and cake (James will mark it on a map) - there is parking outside if your legs are getting tired. There is so much to do and see in the area that we really needed a couple of weeks here at least.

James and Aasta cannot do enough for their guests, from transferring people to and from the airport, collecting people from the beach or local restaurants and even finding a set of allen keys for guests on a cycling holiday! We loved our stay here with Aasta, James and Lukka the dog and have already promised ourselves that we will visit again soon - we did not get the opportunity to try the inviting swimming pool in a sunny walled part of the garden or the boules ‘court’... until next time!

Room Tip: All rooms are good but Marigold has a large veranda as well

Thank-you to all of our guests who have taken the time to write reviews about Colina Flora!
We do so appreciate your comments and suggestions. This helps us to continue to improve as we learn the art of innkeeping.
We also continue to renovate the rooms and the gardens. The Lily and Camellia rooms´ bathroom curtains have been replaced by doors and the lower garden area is being beautified: with stones, potted plants and a vegetable garden.

My wife and I have just spent a glorious week here, holidaying with our daughter and son-in-law. Between us, we occupied all four rooms on offer at Colina Flora, switching mid-week, and can confidently say they all offered a comfortable, clean, relaxing and homely place to stay, each.with its own special character. James and Aasta are the perfect hosts, showing every day that nothing's too much trouble for them to make your stay enjoyable. Aasta shops each day for the fresh provisions that go to provide such lovely breakfasts and terrific dinners, very ably delivered by the ever-present (but subtly inconspicuous) James. As well as tackling many of the background tasks that keep this place so special, James is an absolute fount of knowledge on anything and everything to do with this most beautiful region. His local knowledge on where and when to go, and the best way to get there, we found to be invaluable, and very time-saving. All this stems from an obvious passion for the Sintra National Park and its cultural and natural treasures. Aasta and James work hard to make Colina Flora somewhere that you really love to be in, somewhere that makes you feel like you belong, and they succeed admirably. If you want to walk, hike, cycle, visit cultural sites or try the beaches in this most beautiful region, I don't think you could find a more satisfying place to stay.
