Description: Restaurant Fortaleza do Guincho was opened in 1998, as the Hotel. Acclaimed French Chef Antoine Westermann introduced a haute cuisine restaurant, which quickly became a reference in Portugal. In 2001 the restaurant received a Michelin star, held until today. Originally with a classic French base, Portuguese products and traditions have been gaining more and more prominence in Fortaleza do Guincho. The inspiration that comes from the Sea; the philosophy is based and inspired by the Atlantic, the background setting of the Hotel. The best fish and seafood from the Portuguese coast as well as highest quality of national products are a constant on the Guincho table.

My husband literally wanted to lick the plate after our entree but I talked him into using a piece of bread to do the job. We had our waiter in stitches with my husband's antics but that just added to the charm of the place. We spent a rainy day out of Lisbon going to Sintra and Cascais and I found this spot on the web. The blustery day made for us looking a bit bedraggled but the location on the coast with the storm out over the ocean was a great setting. Our meal was wonderful starting with white port as an appertif. (Don't even try to get sherry in Portugal!) Although we usually order different things so we can taste more of the restaurant's offerings, we both chose the venison and it was superb. Dessert was a chocolate lover's dream but not too sweet. I'd love to go back and this time stay at the hotel, although it's a bit far from everything.

Classic cuisine, excellent and attentive service, delicious food, prime and fresh ingredients, don't miss the Portuguese cheese platter at the end. Consider lunch over dinner - the breaking waves of the Atlantic ocean are magnificent!

This was our second visit to the Fortaleza do Guincho and it did not disappoint. Dishes were perfectly presented, from the amuse-bouche to the mignardises, the quality of the food and wine was impeccable, and the service was attentive but not intrusive.

Without doubt, the Fortaleza do Guincho is the best restaurant in the Cascais area and we have heard people say that it is one of the very best restaurants in Portugal. I am surprised by the negative comments of some reviewers – if they really want something to complain about, I suggest they try Pierre Orsi’s restaurant in Lyon.

on holidays in the Cascais area, we couldn't resist sampling the Fortaleza restaurant. We had a wonderful night with very high level of food and a professional staff (Relais & Chateaux of course). With the kids (16 and 10) the setting was classy and somewhat more formal but nevertheless we had no problems in feeling at home. WE had the menu, accompanied by nice Dour wines. The elegant cooking by the chef resulted in dishes with rouget de la méditerannée, turbot in a "nage de thym" with some lime touch. An adorable juicy filet of 'pigeon' with delicious vegetables en some chocolate dessert to top it off.
all with amuses and the likes 80 € for the menu (+ wines of course to add).
They also have a children's menu
we'll be back

We regularly eat at very good restaurants, and splurge once in a while for a special meal, so we were anticipating eating here. View was stunning at a window table for two at sunset. Prices were even more than the expected high price for a Michelin one star, and the menu was surprisingly limited, such that one of the two prix fixe choices (3 or 4 courses) made even more sense. Maybe we are spoiled by the larger portions that are served in the U.S., but these were small even by European standards, even with the several amuse bouche's. Initial course was good, not great, the entree was excellent, dessert very good. Service was good, but not as attentive as would be expected (i.e., water glass remained empty far longer than appropriate, etc.) and a a large table of 14 somewhat raucous American men did not match the restaurant's demeanor. All in all, I'm sure there are as good or better restaurants in town for less money.
