We recently spent five nights at this lovely hotel and would certainly return. The sea views are stunning and our only regret was that we didnt have a balcony room. all booked up well in advance! We ate in the restaurant most nights and the food was generally very good, although I was a little disappointed with the black pork on our final night, rather chewy and flavourless! But the desserts were delicious! Our room was lovely, although it lacked a bedside table on one side which seemed a little strange. The staff were, without exception friendly and helpful and let us leave our car in the car park while we went off to Lisbon for a couple of days. Cascais is a lovely place and if you prefer a small hotel would certainly recommend Farol Design.

Just returned from a 4 night stay. Beautiful boutique hotel. We had a sea view room which I would recommend. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The jet baths were very much appreciated.

The hotel staff were very attentive and helpful and let us check in early and check out late.

The pool area was lovely with beautiful surroundings which can also be enjoyed from the restaurant which overlooks the sea. Happy hour cocktails from 5.30-7.30pm were excellent.

When dining out in cascais, I would recommend booking restaurants in advance, but the reception staff will be happy to assist you.

The only downside was that to get to the pool area you had to go through the smoking room which wasn't pleasant, although not many smokers used in it when we were there.

All in all a great stay and would recommend to anyone visiting cascais

n.b A taxi from Lisbon airport costs about 50 euros. The train is a lot cheaper but will take you prob an hour and a bit (20/30 mins on metro and 40 mins on the train).

Room Tip: book a sea view room

A fantastic hotel with each room individually decorated. It'd make you feel like a celebrity. Room 303 the best in the all hotel....and that is was not most expensive hotel room. The stay in such relaxed and luxurious hotel might be a little bit boring after two day stay there though.

This place is really fun and chic. You will need to be warned that while elements of the hotels are super design/cutting edge, other parts are rustic/old school. It is sort of edgy boutique hotel meets Cape Cod farm house. And they make the most of both parts. The furniture and fixtures in the public areas are super cool and off the wall. And the giant exposed beams in the rooms are like you are in some forest or something.

The pool is stunning. Jutting out over the water, with an unobstructed view, this really is the focus of the hotel, as it should be. It wasn't very crowded when we were there, fortunately, because we always got great lounge chairs and view. I see the possibility of it being a bit of a zoo as it is small-ish and might get overrun were there to be a lot of people out there.

Also, the restaurant has the same view. We went there for both lunch and dinner and were thrilled with both of them. That view is just mesmerizing. It really is something you will remember for years and years.

The staff is young, very fun and nice as can be. Thumbs up.

We stayed at this hotel for five nights and our first impression was not at all perfect. When we arrived and wanted to check in our room wasn't ready so we took the car to see some surroundings. After 10 minutes the reception phoned us to let us know that there was a problem with our reservation. One night in the middle of our stay, the hotel was over booked and the guy in the reception said they needed to move us to another hotel for that night. We were not at all thrilled about this, and when we came back a couple hours later we were prepared on a discussion that could have been a very unpleasant start on our stay at Farol.

However - this is what happened: The hotel offered us to stay at the property next door - a five star hotel and they assured us that the move would be taken care of by their staff so that we didn't have to worry about it at all. More over, we were offered dinner in the hotel restaurant, and also an upgrade for our remaining nights.

During dinner the manager came to see us at our table, and again apologized, but also informed us that we didn't need to move after all. However, after this amazing dinner, we went up to our room and still found a tray with fresh fruits and a bottle of wine, with a personal thank you note from the manager.

The manager and her staff did everything they could to compensate us for the inconvenience and the really did an amazing job making us feel important and taken care of. And they really succeeded!

Now to the actual hotel experience:

The surroundings are beautiful and it is hard to find a more tasteful pool area with a greater view than at Farol. Its calm, relaxing and with an excellent scenery! The breakfast is amazing and their sushi restaurant is top notch. Innovative and delicious!

Our room was reasonably large, very comfortable and quiet - with a nice view over the harbor. I can agree with previous writers that they must have put most "design efforts" in the public areas but I also believe that the design factor are of less importance in a room where you should only sleep.

If there were to be something said on the minus side, it would be that the hotel have no gym or fitness center. But over all we had a very pleasant stay at Farol with most of our needs very well met.

you may think that a four star rating means that this hotel is pretty good at most things but that is far from true. The hotel is fantastic for certain things and found wanting on some others.
firstly the good news. The location of the hotel is excellent. its a short walk from the centre of town perched on a cliff so the views from everywhere at the back of the hotel are excellent (that means restaurant, bar, lounges, most bedrooms, pool and outside seating). The hotel is a nice size with lots of different areas which cater for most needs. all of the public areas are very design focused and really work well on the eye. the restaurant is very good (see separate review on The Mix). all staff in the hotel are really friendly and the bar staff particularly good (excellent cocktails). We paid extra and went for a designer room which is on the highest level above the restaurant with floor to ceiling glass doors looking straight out to sea. it has really fancy electric external shutters and a balcony and waking to a view of the sea is brilliant. you could argue 5* for most of this.
On the downside we didn't get off to the best of starts when the private car the hotel had confirmed to pick us up at the airport came 2 hours late. To cut a long story short we must have phoned them 10 times and each time we were told it would be 5 minutes. If we had known it was 2 hours we would have jumped in a cab. we were told it was due to a football match but on the way back we only took 20 mins and saw no sign of traffic. unlike the return journey in the hotel car we saw on the bill at checkout the inbound car was sub contracted. To his credit the guy on reception defused my bad mood on arrival very well indeed.
Secondly, whilst the bedroom was a reasonable size, we were not over impressed by the design (possibly because the public areas are so much better. It was design in a sort of 60 minute makeover BHS kind of way. Not what you might call cutting edge. Also the quality of equipment like taps etc were poor. Classic example was the mixer tap shower which seemed to be less than 1mm between freezing cold and skin stripping hot. The draw and cupboard space is also quite poor.
breakfast is a bit of a weak affair. just about enough but not exciting.
The final thing is there was definately a sense of panic that set in if any group of 8 or more people entered the hotel.
The funny thing is you don't want to moan because the staff are so nice even when they get things wrong.
In summary this hotel is really 3.5 rather than 4 but the good parts are so good i could not give it a 3.
We booked through Mr & Mrs Smith and they have it bang on by calling the hotel Budget Boutique. If you go with that in mind you will have a great time. We will definately go back.

Spent two nights at the Farol Hotel. The design of the Hotel is definitely very nice, reading the reviews I think we were quite lucky with the room we got. The terrace was beautiful and it was definitely great waking up in the morning and seeing the ocean straight from bed.
As many reviewers have said, and I must confirm, the bathrooms are horrific. It feels as though they spent all their money on fancy design and forgot about the basics. There IS mold in the corners of the shower, ceiling and just about everywhere. It's really a 3 star bathroom.
On a positive note, the pool area is nice, and definitely worth it. I don't think many hotels have this kind of view in Cascais/Portugal. This being said, I have been to 5 star hotels with gorgeous pools, and this hotel could do much better with their service. We waited 10 minutes before being given a towel and 2 places, I then felt like a criminal when I asked for a menu so we could have a snack....and then I even had the courage to ask for a bottle of water afterwards! It just didn't have the "pampered" feeling that these hotels should have. Everyone seemed bothered by any sort of request.
