“Nice hotel; good location”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Modern hotel with nice buffet breakfast with all the choices one would want. Good bar with pool table and TV. Across the street from the ocean. Less than 5 minute walk to city center. Also, in the opposite direction, close to the Boca del Inferno, a chasm in the shore side cliffs. Paved walk above the ocean for miles. Next door to Museum Conde Castro Guimarães, small museum home with very nice garden/park. Helpful staff. All staff spoke impeccable English which I encountered in most of the places I visited in Portugal. I had large suite with kitchenette, separate bedroom and expansive terrace looking out to the pool. No TV in bedroom though. Beer Garden next door that actually serves pretty good food. Enjoyed my stay completely.

The staff at the Vila Gale were exceptionally gracious, especially Michel and Carlos the manager. And they were put to the test with over 7,000 in town for a Budist Conference during our visit. We loved the views from our room and the delightful village of Cascais. It was a great surprise. The train to Lisbon is walking distance to the hotel and we had a great Fado Dinner at the Cascais Fado Restaurant. Beautiful memories - thank you!

Room Tip: Ask for a ocean view with the kitchenette.

I like that the hotel had great views from the room, loved that it was across the street from the tram, loved the big free breakfast (lots to pick from) only thing I didn't like was that you can only hook up to internet in the lobby. I guess that is a small trade off.

A hotel experience which went well above expectations.

Every room has a balcony and our view couldn't have been better- an unobstructed view of the sea to the left and of the park to the right. The location of the hotel couldn't be better and allowed quick access to all the local highlights.
The rooms were very large and beautifully presented. The inclusive breakfast was amazing, covering every imaginable breakfast food and an open kitchen for specific requests. The evening meals and bar meals were also of a very good value. All staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the vast majority spoke excellent English and went above and beyond to ensure guest happiness.
I am a disabled traveler and this was one of the easiest holidays I have had. Staff received and returned a mobility scooter for me and arranged one for another traveler.
The booking was made through a third party so the room wasn't disabled as required. Staff upgraded us to a suite as a result, before moving us to the nearest (next door) disabled room the next day. Room service came with no fee and staff provided friendly and unobtrusive support through out the stay.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Top floor has brilliant views.

This was our third visit and we had not been since 2011 but the reception staff remembered us. I had emailed the Hotel with a request for a room similar to the one we had previously and this was noted and we were given a room 2 doors away. The staff are helpful and the Hotel is very clean and tidy. The Manager is always around and keeping a close eye on things. It seems to be a happy team of staff and very welcoming and we will definitely return. Thank you Vila Gale!

Room Tip: We were on the higher floor possibly the 5th and the room was very big with a lovely view over the s...

I stayed he with a group and the hotel suited us really well. The rooms were a decent size and comfortable. We had a room on the back of the hotel looking over the car park which was fine. There were no noise problems. Obviously the rooms overlooking the pool and sea were nicer but then they were more expensive too.

The breakfast was decent but when it was busy sometimes there was a bit of a queue for the only egg chef and the buffet would run a bit low. But generally there was plenty of choice and the food was good.

We used the bar in the evening and they were friendly and efficient. For a big group it was good as it had plenty of seating and could accommodate a lot of people in the same area. Some of the guys used the WiFi and the reports were good with communal computers also available.

The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the town centre and as it is along the sea front it is flat and pretty. We didn't really try the pool much but it appeared nice enough.

Overall so long as you are happy with quite a large hotel, it is a good place.

The Vila Galé has a lot going for it, but I would particularly recommend it for the superb location. It is five minutes’ walk from the Marina, a further five from the beach and five more through the old town to the railway station. Furthermore, all of the rooms overlook either the sea or a wooded park and there is plenty of car parking available. Our room was spacious, clean and nicely decorated, as were the public rooms in the hotel. The décor of the bar was a bit boring for my taste, but the service was good and the prices reasonable for the a quality hotel (eg. €3.75 for a glass of port, €6.50 for a Caipirinha cocktail). The grounds are pretty and well-laid out and the swimming pool area is very attractive, and if my wife found the water a bit cold, it was mid-October after all! Last but not least, the breakfast room was huge and coped easily with the large number of guests (swollen by people attending an International Buddhist event) and the breakfast itself was well up to expected standards.

Inevitably, a couple of negatives, though. Although advertised as an “Aparthotel” the self-catering facilities were limited even for a minimal kitchen. The lack of a kettle, toaster (or any sort of grill) and an electric iron were particularly galling. Worse, however, was the standard of lighting. All of the bulbs were of very low wattage and it was virtually impossible to read after dusk unless the reading matter was placed directly under one of the lamps – not an ideal position for relaxing with a book or Kindle.

Finally, one piece of advice: if you are arriving by car, watch out for the sharp left hand turning from the coast road just before the hotel. By the time that you see the Hotel Vila Galé sign, unless you are in the left hand lane it will be too late to turn and you will have a tedious journey around the one-way system to find your way back to the hotel!
