“Best Chicken in Cascais!”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

As a holiday-maker who visits Portugal every year and frequents the Pica-Pau, I can firmly say it is the best chicken in Portugal. The idea of it being deep fried is ridiculous as you can see the chicken being cooked on a spatchcock rotisserie. The chicken is tender and flavoursome with perfect accompaniments.

“Best Chicken in Cascais”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

A traditional dining room filled with azulejo tiles and Grandma's Sunday Best porcelain screams "welcome to our home". Quick and attentive service from the second generation of employees (with excellent English) leads into dinner service. Hot tiles in wood frames act as charger plates, keeping one's dinner plate warm. But enough of how well the place operates...CHICKEN is truly the best in the area. The grilled chicken (no, dear reviewers, it is not fried--just nicely crisped skin from grilling it perfectly) is accompanied by brown rice with mushrooms, fries, and ratatouille. Cost for 4 people, each enjoying a half chicken and sharing 2 bottles of wine--80 euros. WOW. But you might choose the rabbit, beef, seafood and be just as delighted.

“Disappointing Chicken”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

we were especially recommended to try the chicken piri piri and while the portions were very large the chicken was dry not cooked on a BBQ but fried deep fat fryer and smae with the chips they had been cooked twice, seemed the main interest was on the take away service which seemed more popular than the actual food offered in the restaurant the actual piro sauce was good but without juicy moist chicken it did not work

“Excellent, casual restaunant”

Straight away, let me tell you that the Pica Pau is not in Cascais at all, but in fact in Estoril or at most between Estoril and Monte Estoril, so just check your map for location because you'll be a long time searching for it in Cascais. Find the Hotel Londres in Estoril and the Pica Pau is on up the hill away from the coast at the next intersection, not far at all.
Now, that sorted, let me also tell you that we loved it. As you enter, a take away counter faces you and to your right are the tables. The take away is busy so don't get stuck on the que for it by mistake. We were given our choice of seats in what is a very homely, relaxing diningroom. The menu was varied with several dishes that looked appealing.
The staff were very friendly and could'nt do enough to make us feel at home, we could even see and hear them having the craic and a laugh in the kitchen. Happy staff says a lot to me about a place, it says it's a place I want to be. The food was also very good and loads of it, you could not be hungry leaving Pica Pau.
Prices here are also very good. All in all we felt the Pica Pau was one of the best restaurants we ate in. It also has a large bar area which was very quiet when we visited.
Once again food, staff, prices and ambiance are all very, very good. Thank you Pica Pau.
