“Amazing boutique hotel in fantastic location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2012

We know Cascais well and have always wanted to stay at The Albatroz. For a special birthday we decided to stay here for 5 days and it was everything we hoped for. The Albatroz has the best location for any hotel in Cascais. It is right by the sea (with no road in front - unlike Miragem etc), it is next to a couple of beaches and is a very easy walk to all the restaurants and shops in Cascais. Also the train station is only about 2 mins walk away if you want to get the train into Lisbon.

We booked seaview rooms, which are a must when at the Albatroz. For three of our nights we stayed in a deluxe room on the top floor. This room was incredible - massive bathroom, good sized and furnished bedroom and a lovely terrace with far reaching sea views. I loved the feel of the Albatroz. As a boutique hotel - the decor in each hotel rooms is individual and perfectly furnished. With free port is available in the rooms, and with a turn-down service in the evening, the room service is everything I would have expected for this standard of hotel. Nb There isnt coffee / tea facilities in the room - however this is quite common in Portugal. The rooms were very comfortable and quiet.

The dining room leads out to an outside dining terrace that overlooks the sea. This links to the sun terrace, which overlooks a small beach and has a lovely pool. The pool is quite small, however it was never crowded and was great to cool down! In addition we always could find available sun loungers, irrespective of the time of day we went to the pool - and there was always plenty of room to spread out. Sometimes the beach in front of the hotel can be quite busy, but we didnt find that the noise was a problem at all.

We found the staff at the Albatroz very helpful. We arranged in advance airport transfers, and at breakfast we wanted fried eggs (which they cooked for us straight away). The breakfast was great - lots of choice, however do ask if you want something that isnt there.

In summary both the location and luxury of this boutique hotel was amazing. We would definately return!

Room Tip: Choose a superior or deluxe room to get a balcony and great sea view.

We first stayed in Albatroz in June 2000 (room 402). It was like a dream.... And we promised to ourselves to return!
And we returned in mid July 2012 in this old palace. We had Room 403 this time, which is perfectly finished with antiques that visitors can use, with a lovely bed and huge bathroom. One of the most amazing things is the little small “details” that prove care and attention. But above everything, is the stunning view to the ocean.

Moreover, the breakfast that is being served in this wonderful dining room is rich but not overdone and over-exaggerated. Breads are very tasty, fruits are rich!

The staff was superb, professional, helpful, always available and with a real smile.

Yes, everything was amazing, again.

And don’t forget, it is so close to the city center!

Room Tip: ask for front, ocean view!

Tired , squashed pool area and noisy beach below. Pleasent hotel but let down considerably by the above.

Thirty minutes away from Lisbon and what a lovely location...right on the beach and so close to town. The hotel isn't massive and is so comfortable that it feels like home! Staff are pleasant and helpful. We had a room overlooking the beach and pool and it was beautiful and not noisy at all. The bed was large and very comfortable which is not always my experience even in top class hotels. We didn't eat in the restaurant except for breakfast which was good and a bar snack on the day we arrived while we waited for our room to be ready. On both these occasions the food was perfectly adequate. The only issue I had was that there was not a plentiful supply of bathroom products which you would expect in a hotel of this quality and I had to ask repeatedly for more. That really is a very small niggle though in a trip that was perfect in every other sense.

Room Tip: Spend the extra and get a room overlooking the beach/pool.

The Hotel Albratroz was really a unique place to stay. Ask to stay in the renovated 19th century private home across from the beach. The motel has I believe five different buildings. The renovated home,,, basically a three story palace :-) has around six rooms. We stayed in the junior suite on the second floor and it really did not feel like a motel. It had a living room and bedroom with old wood floors, great carpets and full of great furniture. The two balconies overlook the ocean. It also had a carafe of port on the living room table that was refilled day and night whenever we left the room :-) Portugal was great.. the town of Cascais was wonderful and the Hotel Albetroz was the perfect hotel. Restaurant was very good also. Service was excellent. I do not believe they have a spa or gym but you can walk the sidewalks on the beach for miles. Great pool oberlooking the ocean.

Room Tip: Junior suite on the second floor of the 19th century palace across from beach

A 30 minute drive from Lisbon in the heart of the 19th century, for long an ultra exclusive playground for the rich and aristocratic, home-in-exile for Spain's royalty during Franco's rule, lies Hotel Albatroz. For Americans "albatroz" has a negative connotation but don't let that distract you, this is a wonderful and much sought after property in the Costa do Sol. Not for nothing that Frommer calls refers to its reputation as a "lodging for the quietly rich". Its centerpiece is a pair of interconnected beach houses, one of which was originally built in 1793 for the Duke of Loulé and acquired during the 19th century as a holiday home for the Count and Countess de Foz. Palm trees a small but nice secluded swimming pool overlooking the Atlantic, the hotel still shows its original architecture, especially in the foyer leading via a small hall to a wonderful restaurant, with airy, open spaces, contemporary tile-work. The room I stayed in was unfortunately not sea view but "city view", (not a king size bed rather two queen beds, put together, soft pillows, but no duvets, just old fashioned blankets, a small but comfortable bathroom, a small terrace looking over the cobble stone path in front of the hotel.
One point that could be improved: why not adding a small bottle of water when giving "turn-down" service at the end of the day, really a must in a warm climate and airco room.
Breakfast was superb, so was the lunch at the small terrace overlooking the sea with many sunbathing Portuguese families on weekdays, overlooking a small bay. Prices are very reasonable, given that this is a 5 star hotel. reception is very helpful and charming and accommodating. I did not experience anything else as I was for a conference so did not use the spa or other facilities. But surely a place where I would love to come back with family to spend a little more time. Exciting place!

Room Tip: try to get a room with sea view

I stayed here for 4 nights at the end of May. It was a lovely hotel old fashioned with charming and attentive, but not over the top service. Breakfast was excellent with heaps of variety of fruits, bread, cold meat and cheeses (i didn't try the hot). I didn't eat in the hotel apart from one lunch but enjoyed sitting on the terrace after dinner with a drink and my book.

My room wasn't huge, nice a bit bland but more character than chain hotels. I had a lovely balcony overlooking the town.

I haven't been to Cascais for ten years but would definitely go back again, it was charming and not too spoiled. Restaurants were good (bar one) and not overly expensive. A very good value and relaxing (and a bit spoiling) few days for a singleton
