From outside you probably won't like this huge building fortunately hidden behind the dunes. First minutes inside too : you can feel lost in the so large lounge and corridors. "Where is gate 12 terminal 2" ? If you are alone and feel blue, don't stay one minute more ! But if you feel well you will enjoy a lot this very comfortable and modern hotel. Bright and spacious rooms, pleasant indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tasty breakfast and meal buffet with a portuguese touch, large bay windows offering scenic views on the golf course in the Otavios dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. Class and futuristic hotel.

I stayed for the second time at Oitavos, this time with my wife and 7 years-old daughter and under these conditions it left a rather sour feeling.

The good first:

- I like the bedrooms. they are spacious, bright and modern. Proper modern five stars bedrooms.
- I love the breakfast. It has a portuguese flair and offers a very large selection of very good food. Their warm custard tarts are unmissable!
- I love the chef and restaurant. The hotel is surrounded by good restaurants but the one at the hotel is frankly a good option with a day chef menu always tempting.
- I love the friendly service: the staff in the restaurant or elsewhere is always very nice and kind. It is in the Portuguese mentality and it really makes you want to come back to their country.
- I love the location on a great golf course and facing the Atlantic ocean although the club house is a little far away from the hotel but that's fine.
- I love the sea water indoor swimming pool. it is a real bonus when it is windy and it is kept at a lovely temperature but no children allowed.
I love the nanny we got from the hotel. she was adorable and got along with our daughter extremely well.. a real bonus given they don't have any kids facilities.

The not so good:
- Don't go with your children. It is not children friendly at all. No child bikes to ride on the coastal bike path. No kids club. No kids menu. And worse of all the lovely heated indoor pool does not accept children either EVEN when accompanied! This is most irritating because this is a question I asked specifically at time of reservation and I was assured the pool was available to children. They might have meant the outdoor pool but really we should have been told more specifically in particular because the outdoor pool was unusable due to weather conditions. Imagine my daughter's frustration!
Nothing to make you want to come back with your children. But this policy can be considered a plus by many guests.
- The lack of privacy in the bedroom. It is really annoying that the toilet closes only with a see-through glass door. It is frankly unacceptable when you are staying at two in the same room.
it can be filled with large corporate groups and it always annoying to see the hotel and restaurant taken over by loud "suits" when you are there for your holiday. They have huge meeting rooms and lots of rooms so they clearly target this clientele.

The not good at all:
The managing team: we met the manager at time of check-out as they wanted to charge us one night too many and two green fees we did not play. He was arrogant and inflexible. We had to go get our computer and find their confirmation email to show him the package we had agreed upon. they were incapable to find it on their computer. Also when we told him that at the time of reservation we were told children could use the pool, all he found to reply instead of an apology was: "But was it confirmed by email?". Not very clever and truly appalling. If only for that I will never come back to this hotel.
- Their golf policies are very contriving: it is clearly a golf-oriented hotel run by people not knowing what golf is about. I have never seen such a contriving policy in my life. First they have a strict 48h minimum tee-time cancellation policy. Yes 48h! And you can't just work around it and turn up without bookings and say you want to play a round because the best tee-times are in principle reserved for the handful of members and the rest is poorly managed: they don't try to team people up or anything. So in other words, you have to book your tee-times way in advance when you actually reserve the room but once you turn up, you have no flexibility at all. If you decide the weather is not good enough or you'd prefer to go play in one of the other surrounding great golf courses or simply change your mind, they make you pay for you green fees even if you don't play it. Frankly this is unheard of and so against the very nature of the game and of having a nice holiday. It is unacceptable. We have had a serious argument at time of check-out with the manager because he wanted to charge us for 2 free-fees I canceled more than 24h in advance. We had two green fees included in our package and we booked an additional one that they wanted to make us pay for. Also as I pointed out in my previous review, the management of their tee-times simply does not make sense. I practiced two days for a couple of hours near the first tee and only saw a few people teeing-off the whole time. So much for a fully booked course. They don't even try to pair two-balls together to make the most of the available tee-times. Embarrassing.
Finally the golf equipment they rent out is simply too old and rubbish and they charge you a lot of money for it. €18 for a very old and noisy electric trolley we were told might not make the round. Or €70 for a buggy whereas at the neighbour golf Quinta de Marinah, they only charge €40 for it!!!
When a retired English couple did not get the discount they asked for as they were going to use a buggy during all their stay, we heard them saying in the lift they will never come back here. Just like us really.

It is a era pity because it is a place that has a lot going for it and I could live with some of their issues but not with this arrogant management and their golf policies as they really spoiled what could have been a nice stay. We will never come back either.

This hotel made my trip to Portugal. It felt like walking into Architectural Digest. The main floor became even more beautiful at night. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was great- the breakfast buffet was incomparable. We particularly enjoyed the impromptu Port tasting the bartender created for us. We do not play golf, but apparently, it is one of the best courses in the world. We used is as a touring point to see Lisbon- a short train ride into the city. Just fabulous!

Location in the dunes with an atlantic view from each room is spectacular. By car just 5 minutes to Cascais, 30 to Lisbon.
In this recently opened building you have to accept a cool, modern design. Colours from grey to blue, consequently from lobby until bathroom. Less plastic would have been nice.
The stuff is extremely friendly an decent.
During one week there have been just 20 guests, some nights seemed a bit scary to be alone in this huge building.
Reccomandable for people who just want to relax and enjoy the landscape.

The hotel is nice and modern, but too modern for our taste. There is no ambiance in the hotel lobby and rooms - everything is a bit too big and contemporary. Breakfast is average with a fair selection of things to choose from. The spa is very functional, but not very inviting. The hotel can be recommended in case you want a golf vacation and don't care much about the ambiance in the hotel. We wouldn't go back to this hotel however. We also stayed in Penha Longa which is nearby in Sintra and preferred this hotel over Oitavos.

The rooms are huge and modernly decorated. A huge bed. Loved it!
The bathroom is an issue for some peope. It's totally transparent and with thin walls of glass.
The balcony is huge, with beautiful views.
The food is good. But it's hard to compete with the great fish restaurants in the surrounding area.
But for snacks while in the pool is very satisfying.
The golf course is indescribable, I think it's perhaps one of the most beautiful places I've been in Portugal.
The staff is really young, but nice and professional.
