“Delightful Modern Art From Many Countries”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

Yesterday,I had the privilege of enjoying fine 20th Century and very early 21st Century Art at this splendid free art museum.I especially enjoyed their fine European paintings by Pablo Picasso,Robert Delaunay,Paul Delvaux,Nicolas de Stael,Francis Gruber, and Francis Bacon..I especially liked their American paintings by Phillip Pearlstein,Alex Katz,Larry Rivers("French Vocabulary Lesson"),and Mel Ramos("Virgaburger")I also was enamored with their creations by Anish Kapoor,Jeff Koons("Poodle"),Tony Oursler("Judy"-most unique creation in this art museum, for mature viewing and sound effects)and Jannis Kounellis.I spent a day there and I loved it.Their staff was helpful and enthusiastic.

“When ticking boxes isn't enough . . .”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

This is a sad review. A big impressive building and the grounds are lovely, and the staff very helpful. But the content fails to live up to its promise. It has lots of famous names, but the works are by no means their best.

What we did enjoy, by contrast, was a travelling exhibition of 'Happy Consumption' which examined publicity and society in the 20th Century. And we may go back to visit the Architectural Triannual which is on at present. But I wouldn't have wanted to visit for just the permanent exhibition!

“A monument to EU spending...”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

I liked the building itself, but it is hard not to be struck by its gargantuan scale and the astonishing lack of customers in comparison to the neighbouring attractions. As we entered the concourse, it was as if human life on earth had mysteriously ended - until we came upon three men cleaning a small stairway, observed by a vigilant supervisor. Lovely loos - well, they would be, I suppose, if they have same ratio of cleaner:visitor as the steps...

“Culture, music and a nice outdoor seat!”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

Of course, the art museum, the concerts all the time, and a great architecture. Really is a place where you go and forget that you're in the middle of Lisbon/Belém, and can enjoy culture. Also has a great outdoor área where you can seat, drink your coffe and enjoy the view, while you look at the Tagus! Really a reference!
