“Excellent value”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

This hotel is tricky to find even with a GPS. But once you work out where it is, everything about it is top class. Big rooms, refrigerator, washcloths (face towels), towels huge and expensive quality, all the free shampoo, bath gel etc. The tub is large and has Jacuzzi jets they call hydro massage which we tried and work. Location great, grocery store (SPAR) within walking distance. The minibar is stocked but plenty of space for your own stuff. We got in early so we scored one of the six free parking spots. There are others on the street or nearby attractions but they aren't as secure.

This was the first hotel in 10 days in Portugal that served bacon and eggs along with all the usual Continental breakfast. Their napkins/serviettes were real cloth not paper. As it was late September after the tourist season the bar was closed near their terrace overviewing the city, but the receptionist brought us two glasses of Port with cinnamon sticks, peanuts and cashews to watch the sunset and for less than ten euros. My lady noticed stains in the carpet outside our room so she thinks that shows their standards are suffering. I saw the rack rate is 90 euros for a double (we were in a package self-drive tour) and for that price I ignored the stains and class this hotel as excellent value. I paid the same money in London for a hole in the wall.

The restaurant was also closed as the season was over but we had a very good meal around the corner and there are lots of choices although I did not write down the restaurant name.

Room Tip: Get in early to grab a free private car spot.

My wife and I spent one night at the Palacio dos Melos on our way to Porto. In general, it was a pleasant stay and the hotel description in its website is largely accurate. However, I do think that it is a three star hotel as opposed to its current four star hotel. An interesting note: some of the literature of the group that manages this hotel (the Montebelo group) has it listed as a five star hotel, so somewhere down the line it was downgraded.

The positives:

- Very well located in the historic part of town.
- Clean and spacious rooms (even in the standard wing)
- Polite and helpful staff
- Good breakfast
- Well functioning air conditioning
- Very quiet

The negatives:

- The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable
- Parking facilities are very limited
- Lots of stains on the carpet flooring in the hallway
- Door of the minibar cabinet was broken and upon opening could cause an accident
- TV could be flat screen LCD as opposed to the old bulky models
- Cable TV channels are extremely limited and not very diverse

In short, it was a nice stay, but for those of us staying in the standard wings, it would seem that the quality and amenities that would characterize a four star hotel were lacking.

Had a short one night stay at this hotel during a street festival that was taking place in surrounding areas, and we had to turn several old town (narrow) streets before making it to the entrance and be faced with a full hotel parking, so no choice for us other than park on the street, despite the previous information that the hotel provided parking to its guests.
The wi-fi service in rooms only worked with cable and I was provided with a tiny one, so the laptop became a desktop as no other plug was available other than beyond the TV set.
The room had an interesting view over the roofs of Viseu old town but seemed not particularly spotless and the bed was so low that it almost felt to be lying on the floor... Apart from this the room was chilly on arrival with an extreme a/c setting.
The following morning at least the breakfast was quite good, with good fruits and several options to choose from, despite being served in a restaurant with only one waitress. If it wasn't for the nice breakfast I would have rated this hotel lower in the overall evaluation.

The hotel itself is a perfect place: very nice staff, good service, excellent breakfast buffet and the rooms are georgous - free limited parking closeby.

Assuming that a hotel is a place to sleep and relax the recently opened restaurant with outdoor terracce for the rich and beautiful of the town will destroy the hotels good approach (and business model)

The club operates all night long (licence till 4am) and even the people talking on the terrace won't disturbe, the problem is the loud music resp. the bass which you can feel like bum-bum-bum.

So in a nutshell: nice hotel in historic oldtown but if you want to sleep you better should go to other Montebelo Hotels (or the Poussada).

Even they state different on check-in: NO free Wifi, only cable connection in the room is free - also a NO-GO in 2013

There is no pool nor Gym in this place!!!!

This hotel was perfect for exploring Viseu, particularly the old town. All main sights were within walking distance and there were a number of good restaurants in the vicinity serving local and traditional food. The breakfast was ample with juices, cereals, delicious breads and pastries, and a few hot and cold items. The rooms were well furnished and the bathroom was well supplied. The staff at reception were very courteous and helpful and spoke English fluently. I needed to use a taxi a couple of times as was attending a conference outside the old town. The service booked by the Reception staff was very prompt.
Only very minor complaint was that the TV had a very limited choice of English language stations.

My husband and I spent the New Year's Eve at this amazing hotel, boutique style in a old buiding.
The location is outstanding: in the heart of Viseu's historical center, few meters from The Se, Vasco da Gama Museum. You feel like walking through the past: narrow streets of blocks, restaurants with tiles, so wonderful!
The breakfast was a sensation: overall itens with good quality in a charming room! I can't forget the breakfast until now!
We spent the New Year's Eve at the Restaurant Mesa da Se! So warm service and abundant food: we ate the Bacalhau with natas, with a Portuguese Red Wine, so unforgetable night!
I would came back for sure!

This was a charming hotel and fantastic location for strolling downtown historic Viseu. The parking was a little difficult but once we found it the hotel went out their way to secure free parking. The hotel itself is a marvel. You feel like you are living in a private home eith all the new amenities without losing the charm of beautiful furniture, paintings, etc. the breakfast was fantastic and all home made. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We had a city view and it was nice to look out at the cobbled streets at night. Wifi worked througho...
