We stumbled over this place for lunch and liked it so much we returned for dinner. Same menu.
Open terrace so lovely for a lazy lunch in the sun, drinking some local wine and nice salads.
Friendly service.
ReCognised on return. In the evening best go early as the drinkers take over and while pleasant and not rowdy, eating in a drinking place is different in atmosphere from a restaurant.
It was a short stay, this was our fave.

We visit Viseu every year. This is the first time we have found this restaurant. It is located in the old part of the city - high up. Don't even think of taking a car, take a taxi which in this area are not expensive. The building is very old - stone entirely outside., inside has been remodelled keeping stonework where possible and elsewhere altered with exemplary taste and consideration
The restaurant is on two floors and give an impression of cosyness mixed with up to date design and comfot. All the tables and chairs are a mixture of old and very old but very comfortable. The menu covers a large range of food - they have one in English so no language problems. I had pasta with meatballs and it was truly delicious., also had some home made crisps which double for fries - gorgeous. Staff are just what I wish for, attentive, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly - also they smile and speak English. Lovely - lovely - lovely.

This restaurant was exactly opposite Hotel Palacio dos Melos where we were staying. We tried the recommended platter for two. There was an interesting variety of meat, fish and vegetable-based items and we were quite full by the end. The food was very good and so was the local wine we ordered. The place seems to be very popular with locals and with tourists. There is also a bar upstairs, but we didn't visit.

A couple of people had recommended this restaurant to me and I was looking forward to something a little different than the standard Portuguese fare. We made an early reservation, hoping to be out by 9 pm so we could watch a nearby street performance. We left at 10 pm, without bothering with desserts or coffee, having missed the act completely.

It took them an hour to bring the dish of stuffed mushrooms we'd ordered as a starter!

When the mains finally came, they were nothing to get excited about, even though mine had sounded quite interesting on the menu (dourada with lime and ginger served with endives and walnuts). I'm afraid I won't be recommending it to anyone. Perhaps we should have gone for the house speciality, which is tapas, but to be honest, it didn't look that appealing and in my view, if you can't serve a dish well, and in a timely fashion, you shouldn't put it on the menu.
The bar area upstairs looks inviting, with separate rooms and a lovely terrace. I don't expect the service is much better there though. A pity.

Maria Xica offers its customers a new way of presenting traditional Portuguese food. You can try a number of dishes in a "tapas"-like fashion. The house wine is the best from the region, Dão.
