The Pousada in this lovely town is a superb and recent showcase for the organisation's sensitive use of old buildings originally designed for other purposes. The refurb delivers a breathtakingly beautiful result.
We had a suite corner room which was well worth the modest premium.
We enjoyed the Spa treatments, the masseuse Lilyann was expert and very nice.
Staff generally very helpful.
Location great to visit the lovely old town which has a relaxing atmosphere it's historic centre very intact.
The management need to think about how to get more customers into the hotel as the eating and drinking facilities were undersubscribed during our stay. Unlikely to want t o eat on our own in any dining room.
Well done , pousadas

We were recommended to visit Viseu on our mini-tour of Portugal by a friend & chose the Pousada for accommodation. Our sat-nav got us to the correct roundabout in Viseu, but told us to turn right & declared we'd reached our destination. After a couple of circuits we parked & got to see if we could spot it on foot. Anyway after a call to the Pousada for directions we found it (after taking 3rd exit instead of 1st from roundabout), so not a great start.

Anyway, to the hotel! The building (an old hospital) was nicely converted and the rooms were pleasant, clean & spacious. A very nice covered courtyard served as a bar, lounge area and overflow for restaurant. Only issue here was the bar wasn't always manned, so we had to go to reception & have them send a staff member to serve us a couple of times.

I should mentioon the reception staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful.

Outside a decent sized pool, which was in the shade of the building in the afternoon (which was fine by us, as the sun was very strong).

The only negative here was the restaurant. The menu looked fine & we chose oven baked cod, which looked great when it arrived, but as we ate it discovered it wasn't cooked all the way through.

Breakfast was a buffet. The orange juice was obviously not fresh (& either made from a concentrate or who knows what), and the coffee was poor by Portuguese standards.

Unfortunately we'd booked to stay 2 nights here, which in hindsight was a mistake. We ate out on our 2nd night!

In summary, accommodation was comfortable and good, but I wouldn't eat here again!

We were travelling at the beginning of July with our 8 year old son. After staying in Aparthotels in the Algarve it was so nice to be treated to some 5 star accommodations. The staff are brilliant and so very helpful! The rooms are large - we had three beds and were not crammed at all. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. The hotel maintains it's historical beauty but brings modern conveniences. The cloister has been converted into a sitting area and bar and is so beautiful and modern. There is a reading room on the 2nd floor where you can enjoy the view and relax. The pool is lovely - not too big. Viseu itself is really very nice with old world charm and the hotel is a short walk from everything you need to see.

There is an Italian restaurant off the main square across the road from the gardens - don't remember the name - that offers some cheap self serve food in huge quantities and great prices! Good for a quick family dinner.

We were only there for two nights but could easily have stayed the week. If you are looking to relax this is the place!

We arrived in Porto, rented a car and drove to Viseu. When we entered the Pousada de Viseu, we were welcomed so warmly we almost felt like family. Our room was wood paneled. The bathroom, which was very clean, neat and quite spacious was down a corridor from the actual sleeping area and we both liked that. There were French doors onto a small balcony next to the bed. We kept the doors open all night and enjoyed a lovely breeze. We ate in the interior courtyard that evening. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive without being obsequious. Our waiter even took a couple of pictures of us so that we could remember our evening at the Pousada. Breakfast in the dining room was buffet style and good. Unfortunately, we only spent one night there. Check out was easy and fast. If we ever go back to Viseu, we will definitely stay here again.

Having long harbored a desire to stay at one of Portugal's state-founded chain of historical building-turned hotels since my parents' trip to Portugal many years ago, the opportunity of a half price special on a night at the Pousada de Viseu proved irresistable. Viseu was chosen out of convenience--it was between the Douro Valley and our next destination, Coimbra, and while it has an attractive medieval center, the main attraction was the Pousada itself.

This Pousada is one of the newest in the chain, which has been newly privatized and is now in the hands of top Portuguese hotel group, Pestana. It is located in a 17th century hospital, which has been comprehensively gutted and rebuilt, but retains much of its classic architectural style. Rooms and furnishings on the other hand, are modern to a nearly Scandinavian extent.

I would have liked to give this place five stars--the facilities, rooms and the refurb deserve it. To some extent the service does as well, but it was very inconsistent, let down by bar service that was outrageously slow--upwards of 10 minutes to register an order, well more than that to receive it, particularly by the otherwise excellent outdoor pool. Minibar prices were double those seen in other hotels we stayed at in Portugal, including a €4.25 litre of mineral water that was available for €2.50 at the weakly serviced bar, and for free by the glass in the spa.

Breakfast was very good, as were the spa facilities, though the prices for treatments were high as well. No regrets about this visit--a night in a Pousada should be the feature of any Portugal trip. Tightening up on the service standards and affording slightly better value would make this a truly five star experience.

Room Tip: Having had a room switch between standard and superior due to a TV problem, the quality standards ar...

I was recently here for 5 days as it was a friends wedding (Early August) with a group of friends.. The building is very nice with an old architectural feel on the outside but a very modern feel on the inside. It has an outdoor swimming pool and is located pretty much at the center of Viseu.

The staff was very welcoming and spoke English well enough (Patricia was especially helpful but the rest of the staff were just as efficient). They were actually very helpful with all my queries during my stay. The room itself was clean and modern with everything you'd need for your stay. There's a safe, hair dryer, plenty of towels and your typical complimentary soaps. The cleaners were very efficient and considerate to clean around your belongings whilst we were out.

Only down point I could think of was the poor internet.. there was a good signal but there ISP constantly logs you out of a session every couple of minutes which is very frustrating.

The breakfast buffet was yummy and had a good variety of bread, hams, fresh fruits, tarts so a little something for everyone. Swimming pool opens and closes at 8am-8pm respectively. I did hope that the indoor gym and pool would be open a little later but that was not the case.

Theres a great outdoor restaurant at > 15 Praça Dom Duarte near the cathedral which is about a 10min walk away and a restaurant called "Restaurante Cacimbo" about 2 minutes away from the hotel that I would recommend. Also down next to the waterfall round a bout theres a mini train tour that costs about 2 euros which lasts about an hour.

Overall I enjoyed my stay thoroughly, if you do travel to Viseu this is the ONLY hotel you should be looking at.

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side of the hotel will be quieter since its not above the swimming pool. Sun ri...

There was nothing to fault this hotel. It is built from a converted hospital around a central atrium. The room we were given, for three people, was enormous and one of the most comfortable I have ever stayed in. Breakfast was generous and of good quality. We felt very privileged to stay here in this beautiful city. The wedding fair was on when we were there and we got to see the catwalk models as well! Staff were excellent - spoke very good english and were helpful and polite. Great stay.
