I recommend reading about the library before hand so that you can see all the details. I stayed inside for a long time and was astonished with the architecture but in particular with the wooden shelving system, the symbology behind the design and he bats!... it is impressive, by far the most iconical space in Coimbra and one of the most elaborate pieces of portuguese architecture. If you enjoy this type of architecture you should also visit the Convento de Mafra on your way to Lisbon.

It was an amazing visit. The Coimbra university dated from the 13th century. The library is from the 18th century. beautifully decorated with gold, red and black colores. All the walls covered with books. You can't take picture inside the library, and you can enter only with a guided tour at specific hour.

Buy your ticket early, 0900 to 0930 and be in before the tour buses, they allocate you a 20 minute slot which you must be outside the library. Only 60 people allowed in each 20 minutes. Don't forget to go down and see the prison. The entrance is inside the library.
If you have the time, spent the extra and see the science museum.

The interior is breathtaking. It's part of a three visit combination with the Palace, the chapel and the library. Buying the ticket at 11:30, I got assigned a 1:20 visiting time, which gives me enough time to visit the other two sights and have an orange juice before hopping back for the 20 minute visit - all for 10 euros. No photos inside, so get a postcard at the end...

Must see, part of the university's tour.
No pictures allowed inside.
Which is good, makes you atop, really look and admire.
